Angel Face - Own Root

I lost an Angel Face some years ago - it is one of my favorite roses, but understand its difficult and blackspots. Would it be any better own root? Anyone have any experience with it grown this way? I am really tempted to try it.

No. It would NOT be better own root than budded, in fact, it would very likely be far worse. It isn't a strong variety in the first place. Budding at least increases the vigor of the individual plant, improving its performance very much compared to an own root. Might you be able to get it to grow and flower? Probably. Would it be any healthier own root than budded? Doubtful and rather probable it would be worse than the original. Would it possibly grow and bloom better than the budded original? Very likely no.

In the right place, at the right time, with the right culture, it can probably be an OK plant own root. If you had issues with the budded one where you are now, expect those, and probably worse, from an own root plant. This was selected for introduction as a budded plant during a time when regular spraying of your roses was not only accepted, but expected. You CAN root it and you may be able to grow it, but that doesn't mean you'll like it that way. Kim

Kim - if you said it, I believe it. Enough said! I will probably give it another try because it is just so lovely. I had it really doing well - then I broke my patella and was in a leg brace and couldnt do anything much for months. It didnt get the coddling I had been giving it and faded away. I dont know of another rose that looks like it. If you do, I would sure appreciate knowing about some and would like to try them. Thanks!

Ow! Judith, I'm sorry! I can't even think of that break as I FEEL it! I pray you're 100% now.

I don't know what to suggest to replace Angel Face in your climate, but Edmunds is listing it budded and in stock at the link below. S&W had it but shows it as sold out now. IF you are going to go for this particular variety, get it budded if at all possible. Perhaps if there is a minimum order, you might consider buying that number of Angel Face plants to hedge your bet, then give them the best of everything. And, for Heaven's sake, whatever you did to break your patella, don't do that again! LOL! Hope it helps. Kim

Here is a link that might be useful: Edmunds Angel Face

Kim, I was actually thinking of ordering a few roses from Edmunds....and really, the Angel Face I had was doing quite well - before I was put out of commission. I might as well try it again - whats the worst thing that can happen? It will die! I will put it in another spot that gets afternoon shade - if we have another 3 months of 105 daily like last summer - am quite sure that would do it in. At least I know now to just go with the budded stock - actually, I am near Tyler and go there frequently so know I could find it there. The blooms are so gorgeous that it will be worth it to pamper it. Love the ruffled lavender confections....

I broke the patella by slipping on a broken feed bucket handle in my barn. When I think of all the bad horses I have ridden and been bounced off and never a serious injury....ridiculous! Then had surgery on the other knee - patella slipped into trochlear notch - 4 months on a walker....now THAT was pure misery! But...I got a golf cart to keep from going insane and it was the best thing I ever did. You should see all the gardening equipment and plants that I haul around on it! Now I can't live without it.

I am about due for a Tyler trip.....when the pear trees start blooming, the nurseries up there are loaded with plants and I must go to Chamblees! I have a list already made....I am sure I can find Angel Face there. Now, if only I could dig holes as fast as I can buy roses.....

Oh, Judith! My family is looking at me as if I've slipped a cog (well, they KNOW I have! LOL!) as I read of your "exploits". I am glad something good has come out of all that misery and that you are sure you can find a locally grown Angel Face with some good roots under it. If it did well for you, go for it! Why not? You know the rose. You know what it requires and it "touches" you where nothing else has, so it's a win-win. Besides, as you said, it's TIME to visit Chamblees and all the rest of the "dope peddlers"! LOL! Good luck. Kim

Juat confirming what Kim said--I had three ownroots and they were weak growers as well as (notoriously) susceptible to disease. In fairness, mine also had mosaic virus.

So sorry to hear about your injury. Hope you are doing much better now!

In your zone if you can find it on fortuniana I'd go for that. That's a root stock that may actually have a chance of improving AF's performance. Not that it will make it any less blackspot prone...

Alameda -- save yourself the grief and go get Blueberry Hill on Fortuniana from K&M roses. Same look. MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better plant.

RE: Angel Face - Own Root

This posting put me in mind of a posting by Kim way, way back in prehistory on a forum called rec.garden.roses. The subject was how to grow a vigorous plant of Angel Face. I remember one key element of Kim's advice was to disbud the plant for most of its first year. I followed this advice and I managed to have a satisfactory plant of this notoriously fragile rose, here in zone 5, for a few years.

RE: Angel Face - Own Root

Congratulations Mike! Yup, anything weaker growing will benefit from that treatment.

Kathy, Blueberry Hill will work as an Angel Face substitute except for where it gets hot. Here, Blueberry Hill shuts down as completely as Rhapsody in Blue does when it gets hot. AF and Blue For You keep right on pumping out the flowers here when the others shut down. Kim
