| Well, I received my first cuttings in the mail yesterday from an exchange made on HMF. I rec'd cuttings for CL Cecile Brunner & SDLM and I shipped out Phyllis Bide and Ballerina.
I know its possibly a little early, but I figure with the greenhouse, I can get started. Thanks to advice rec'd on the Prop & Exchange forum, what I rec'd looked almost identicle to what I shipped ...I was a little worried about my wet papertowel wrapped zip-loc cuttings (since I didn't have any newspaper and wanted to get them off in the mail yesterday). Anyway, this is also my first serious attempt to root cuttings (possibly should have practiced on my own roses first). I went to Lowes and bought rooting hormone, potting soil, perlite, and peat moss. I clipped the botton 1/4 inch off each cutting and scored them with a sharp knife. I also tried to get two bud eyes on each cutting below the soil mixture. Right now I have them all out in the little greenhouse, and I put upside down gallon ziplocs over 2 of the 6 pots (wasn't sure if they needed it being in a protected environment). Does that sound about right? The whole thing was so much fun! I get to feed the rose addiction without spending tons of money :) I also have an exchange going on with Irish Rose Grower from this forum, where I'll be getting Tamora, Marie Pavie, Abraham Darby, and Ispahan in exchange for Belinda's Dream, Golden Princess, and Queen E. Here's a pic of the little mess I made tonight...great use of my dining room table! Thank God for antibacterial spray! Tammy |

| BEST of luck to you, dear! It may work fine, but if it doesn't, try, try again, until you get a routine that works for you. I've propagated dozens, and, by this time, probably hundreds of roses from cuttings, for my own garden and for friends; and I've mailed off and received by mail many cuttings from which I and others have gotten new roses. It's a wonderful activity, putting another piece of gardening in the gardener's hands. I do ask you to consider whether a recent rose may still protected against unauthorized reproduction, not as a legal matter, but as a moral one. Hybridizers who make such wonderful new roses deserve to profit from it. However, it's easy for me to be moral on this subject as I grow almost exclusively old and older roses (and that's another reason for growing them). Good luck, and congratulations on starting! Melissa P.S. I don't know much about rooting roses in greenhouses, but I suspect the ziplocs over the pots may be overkill. |

| Thanks Melissa, I figure for a first try, we'll see how it goes. I don't believe any of the roses I'm exchanging are still under patant, all of the patents are over 20 years old. In my initial post regarding how to root cuttings, I made a point to mention that I didn't want to root patented cuttings. Trust me, I definitly support buying from nurseries, I've spent close close to $2000 both last year and this year on online sellers :) Its just a side hobby and a chance for me to learn how to do something new! |

| You'll find that in our part of the world fine tuneing the moisture in both the pot and the air is the key to success, coupled with air and soil temperature. Keep a diary of what happens and (if a cutting appears to die) get it out of the pot so its fungal problems don't affect the other cuttings. |
