Experience with reds in hot dry summers?

Here is the issue. I promised myself I would never buy red roses that fade to blackish purple and suffer in my hot dry summers. However, my resolve is cracking when it comes to Oklahoma. I wonder if it might just merit the bother to protect it from afternoon sun, or if planting it under the overhang of a northfacing wall would be ok, i.e. bright indirect light.

Others I would like to try (plus of course Oklahoma):

Black Garnet
Black Magic
Black Velvet
Mr. Lincoln
Lavaglut
Dame de Coeur
Firefighter/Hacienda
Liebeszauber/Love's Magic
Europeana
Lasting Love
Deep Secret

Suggestions or experience with any of the above are welcome.

Mr. Lincoln and Deep Secret will "blue" on you as they age (i.e. fade to that purple color you dislike) just like Oklahoma and most of the rest of the older dark reds. There are truer reds that do not do this however -- Opening Night was the first rose advertised for not doing the blue fade routine. Lasting Love is also a good choice, but it starts out a smokier color, not bright red. Let Freedom Ring would be good -- true red, good form and no bluing there. A floribunda that I'm getting this year that I have high hopes for (and which is in the garden centers now) that is advertised as not bluing is Drop Dead Red.

Here is a link that might be useful: Drop Dead Red

I live in Texas where summer sun can be brutal. I have Cadenza in full, all day sun and it stays a bright red. I also like the Buck rose Bright Melody. Alec's Red is another favorite - it is in half a day sun. None of these blue nor burn in the sun. Alec's Red is very fragrant too - I highly recommend this one.

Can't get much hotter or drier than my climate, lol, and I'd strongly recommend Black Magic, Lavaglut and Ingrid Bergman. None of these blue, purple or pink in my yard.

I second the above post. I am in the Sacramento area, as hot and dry as I can imagine. Ingrid Bergman, Black Magic, and Lavaglut do very well, as does Crimson Bouquet, a blood red color. None of these fade to pink or blue.

Lavaglut gets some powdery mildew in spring and fall, but it is very pretty in the heat and the small blooms last well.
Ingrid gets better and better every year with quick repeating flushes.Go for it! Reds are wonderful.

Oh thank you! I only recently became interested in the reds and have only three so far, Olympiad, Crimson Bouquet, and Opening Night. I am glad to hear they are good ones, but I've decided to switch to own roots so Olympiad and Opening Night will be moving to my parents' (because they have a gardener who can deal with rootstock suckers and I don't like to police my plants for Dr. Huey all the time). CB is a band from last year, I think I have to wait another year before it does anything.
I will see which of your suggestions I can find own root, but so far Black Magic seems to be only available grafted.

Afternoon shade does help.

I was told today Ingrid Bergman does not purple

Lavaglut is a different kind of very dark red as Mr. Lincoln an Co. and it never aged to blue or purple. I think this is the only dark red that I have in full sun, meaning no shade whatsoever from dawn to dusk and it still does very well.

Final choice was Ingrid Bergman and Black Magic! Black Garnet I saw blooming in a nursery once in the summer, so I'm hoping it's tough. Plus maybe Deep Secret, Grande Amore, Love's Promise... LOL.
My mother has something that might be Lavaglut or not, so I think I will get a band of it as well to see if grows up to be the same.
