Climbers supports??

How do you choose where and what to use as supports for your climbers? Do you all have fences/pillars/old barns/tripods? Or do you only choose a rose for a certain spot. In other words, do you only buy roses that you have spots/special places for...

I have a prefect spot for my (just ordered ) Sally Holmes but didn't have any supports for her--so I purchased antique wrought iron fencing sections for her... Thank you..

There's no rules, you just have to have something to support everything.

The 1st time I tried to plant climbers, I mounted trellis work to the side of the house (used PVC pipe fittings and long screws to allow the trellis to stand off the wall).

Here's a picture years ago from that first attempt.

However, after several more years. Both the climbers far out-grew the trellis and started to tear it up (the red one on the right eventually grew to like 16+ feet tall).

Once the roses got so big as well as the bushes in front of them, I couldn't care for them as well and finally had to pull the trellis work down last year.

It's a little bit of both. Sometimes I have a spot and I look for a rose that will fit that spot. Sometimes I have a rose that just gets so big it needs support so I have to look for a support that will work in that spot with that roses needs. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules.

Sally Holmes doesn't actually need to be trained, though you can if you like. I grew mine as a big shrub, about seven feet tall by six feet wide. Passersby just loved it.

Wrought iron fence can be used for rose supports to wonderful effect. Either way you're going to have a wonderful feature in your garden.
