when to first fertilize roses for the season?

When should you apply the first fertilization in the spring? I'm in nw Missouri zone 5. Most of the roses (ht's) don't have activity yet but a few do have some tiny leaves opening, the hardier roses.

Fertilize two weeks after roses start to leaf out.

Plants can't use nutrients until leaves have expanded. If you fertilize too early, some nutrients can be wasted by leaching.

If you can't get around to fertilizing that soon, don't worry about it. The roses have some stored energy in their canes to fall back on, so it's not like the exact time is crucial.

And if you are a somewhat lazy gardener like I am, they get fertilized in the spring when I get around to it. They will lap up the food just about any time you give it to them. : )

I like to use something gentle like cottonseed meal or weak fish emulsion for the early feeding and a stronger food when they are halfway between starting to grow and actually forming the flowers. With pots I use a gentle food more often.

I fertilize right after I spring prune and I don't prune until the roses have begun to actively grow. Like Michale said, if they are not growing they're going to be using the fertilizer and it's a waste.
