| I am just putting together my spring order from Angel Gardens. I am looking to get about 5-6 own-root roses from Pam, either quart or gallon, depending on availability. Any opinions on these roses? I'm having a difficult time deciding. The only one I'm sure of is Stormy Weather. Beth posted pics on the Rose Gallery forum, and I think I have a new favorite!
Francis Dubreuil
Blue Boy (moss)
Versigny
Mountbatten
Petite Pink Scotch
Lavender Pearl
Elizabeth Stuart
Bordure Nacree
Ornement des Bosquets
Scepter'd Isle
Mistress Bosanquet
Honorine de Brabant
Mme. Scipion Cochet
Heaven on Earth
Little Mermaid
Kronprincessin Viktoria
Stormy Weather
Mlle. Blanche Lafitte
Thanks, Tammy |

Francis D. - The most beautiful dark red that I have had, but I had to SP for some reason. I think possibly that it could not take the heat of our summers. I liked the rose, but it would not thrive for me. I do not think it was disease, but heat. Heaven on Earth. Now that you mention it, I think I will get another. It was disease resistant and beautiful Kronprincessin Viktoria. I have had a few of these, and they are pretty, but do not live up to the quality of the SDLM. For a white rose, I love Ducher. Sammy

I recommend the three that Sammy mentions. Francis Dubreuil (actually it's Barcelona) should be well adapted to ETN, especially if you can manage afternoon shade. KpV is one of my best roses, very free blooming, much more reliable than SDLM in a mild, damp climate, though not as finely shaped.

KpV does very well for me and is lovely although not very similar to SdlM. Mistress Bosanquet, I rose I had in the past, is pretty and blooms well, but I didn't care for its small but vicious thorns.

The only one I have is Honorine de Brabant. Lovely very full blooms of white with pink stripes. Some fragrance but not really strong. Gets about 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Very flexible canes that drape. In my climate I get one big flush in the spring and then just a few blooms the rest of the season. It does black spot and can mildew. Winters well.

Thanks, this is definitly giving me some ideas. I think I'll definitly get Francis Dubreuil, but Pam said KPV won't be ready for alittle bit. Also, she won't have Versigny or Mountbatten, and just stuck the cuttings for Honorine de Brabant & Heaven on Earth. Little Mermaid is currently under the misters...so those three will be a little while. So that narrows the list a bit too :)

Sceptered Isle, in zone 9, was a water guzzling, shapeless monster. I dug mine up. It might be more civilized, and bloom better, for you. Of all the Austins I have grown, SI had by far the highest water requirement. East of the Mississippi, where aridity is not a factor, it might be possible. It grows both up and out, with some canes crawling along the ground and others growing straight up.

Here in the SF Bay Area, Scepter'd Isle was one of Austin's octopus form roses (as indeed is WS2000). Come to think of it, Honorine de Brabant is a much taller version of the same form. Personally I find this plant shape difficult to work with in the garden, but a little more acceptable from tall roses such as HdB than lower growing ones such as SI and WS2000. SI does have pretty roses, though. Francis Dubreuil is beautiful and fragrant. It often gets serious rust late in the season here, but otherwise is healthy in my climate. I just finished pruning and spraying it a couple of days ago, and this was a bad rust year. Rust is pretty much a regional problem, so if you don't get rust in your area, this may not be an issue for you. As MichaelG mentioned, it is generally believed to be the early HT Barcelona, not a tea at all. It does not look anything like a tea to me. In my garden I do label it as FD, but only because that it how I bought it. Rosefolly

I grow Francis Dubreuil and Scepter"d Isle. Both are on fortuniana rootstock. SdI is as big as a horse. Tons of blooms all season long. I had FD on it's own roots for a few years. Was always a small bush that really didn't do to much for me. Loved the blooms enough to move it on to a good root stock. What a difference. 4' tall, tons of blooms all season long with good long cutting stems (something I never got when it was own root). It needs afternoon shade or the blooms will burn. If you get it, put it in a nice decor pot so it can be up off the ground and you can enjoy it.

Ken, my OWN-ROOT Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona is six feet tall with tons of bloom all season long. It's in a raised location, and that's a liability in my case! This probably has to do with it preferring the climate of Asheville to the climate of Florida, but here the rose certainly has no need of rootstock or an elevating pot.

My own-root FD is about 3 1/2 feet tall, blooms generously in frequent flushes, but I don't get florist length stems on the blooms. They are fine for cutting and putting in smaller vases, though to tell the truth, I rarely cut flowers for the house. With well over 100 roses growing, I still imagine that I won't have enough for the garden. Rosefolly

I'm the same as you Rosefolly, I just really enjoy seeing them in the garden. Besides, my cat would most likely eat them. What I ended up doing is placing one early spring order of what Pam has available now, and then in late spring/summer she's going to hold the varieties for me as they become available and then ship those together. My early Spring order is: Francis Dubriel - gallon Petite Pink Scotch - gallon (suppossed to be a very large gallon) Mistress Bosanquet - quart Mme Scipion Cochet - gallon and I asked about Austins, and since she said she had a very large qt of Mary Magdeline, I ordered that too (why not!) Late Spring I'm waiting on these to be big enough to ship: KPV Scepter'd Isle Blue Boy (centerfolia/moss hybrid I've been wanting!) Mlle Blanche Lafitte Then, I didn't realize Ornement des Bosquets is a European import, so I'm on the 2013 wait list for that one...something to look forward to! I already have two German import rugosas on the wait list (Wild Fox & Wild Eagle)
