Rose Trellis

I would like to build a trellis on my shingle house for my climbing roses however have not seen the perfect solution such that it is permanent, does not damage the house, has space between the plant and the house and is discreet.
Does anyone have a perfect solution. In England they use pipe and wire on stone homes but that will damage a shingle face.

We just had an arbor built for our very big Summer Wine rose. Every winter the storm winds brought it down with its copper pipe trellis until the trellis was completely trashed. Our arbor frames a window with about 18" clearance outside the window, both to sides and top. It is free standing treated 4 by 4's with its legs set into the ground in concrete. It should frame my office window by the end of summer. It is set with enough margin around the window that it should not block my view but simply frame it in beautiful roses, and big red rose hips like jewels during the winter. The wood is stained a redwood color and the grid up the sides and top appear to be aobut 9" apart. I can't wait for June to see it covered in flowers!

OH yes, In order to suppport it from where it is planted by the deck, our capenter removed 2 boards from the deck, set that side of the arbor through the deck into concrete, and cut the deck boards to fit around it. It looks just fine...doubt anyone will notice once the rose grows back into place. We are delighted with the results.

historically, trellis was never designed to be used against a house or wall but as a freestanding divider or screen in the garden. The dutch were the great users of this but of course, the french really popularised it and made it their own. As a support for roses, it leaves a lot to be desired and the tendency to tuck stray canes behind always leads to disaster. I can think of nothing which does not involve some sort of fastening into masonry or walls which would suuport a grown rose but there are a number of unintrusive fastenings such as vine eyes and wires which cause minimal damage.

I just got my Lowes Creative catalog and they have this really attractive free standing trellis project in it. I don't know how sturdy it is but maybe with a few changes in materials to something a little stronger it might work!

Here is a link that might be useful: Lowes trellis project

I was thinking about trying it myself. I really do like the look of it!
