How Often Should I Be Watering New Bare Roots?

I put 5 bare roots in the ground a couple of weeks ago. I gave them 3 gallons of water each this past Saturday. Not sure if I should re-water them yet (Wednesday) or wait until the weekend.

The problem is my irrigation system isn't turned on yet - so I have to walk out with sprinkler buckets of water, from the house, to accomplish this. Not an easy task as you all could imagine.

Complicating it? My house is being painted and the doors and windows are plastic wrapped to protect them lol. I have one door which I can barely get in and out of :P

Soak bareroots in with a lot of water (> 5 gallons) to settle the soil, then mound them or Wilt-Pruf the cane stubs. Then they will use hardly any water until they are well leafed out--no need to water at all until the soil begins drying.

Ok, great I did all of that. I watered in really well when I planted and mounded them up. They seem to be fine and the last two days here have been very foggy and misty in the morning. In fact, it kind of drizzled today early on so everything was kind of damp.

They haven't begun to leaf out, although the ones which were planted last year have.

It's supposed to rain fairly well Saturday so I'll get a reprieve from dragging out buckets lol. The irrigation gets turned on the week after - thankfully!

Unless you have very sandy soil, the initial soaking will keep the soil moist for weeks. The plants aren't using any water because they have no leaves. There is no need to water.

Not at all. I had two types actually - one area was pretty decent good looking loamy soil. The other area, kind of clay like - but not too dense. Both seemed to soak up the water pretty well - not a lot of run off. I amended the soil in both areas of course, at planting with Dr. Earth's soil with some their rose fertilizer at the bottom of the hole.

The American Rose Society basically says that it can be confusing with all of the different articles and books, but that the amount is totally dependent on the "season and condition of your garden"-www.ars.org/pdfs/water_roses.pdf

When it comes to Roses I usually ask my grandfather. He describes how best to water when your planting your rose. If you want to take a look check out my link.
