| i need a type of rose i have no idea what to look for. i am looking for one that: grows fast, climbs and is bushy lots of blooms( dont need to be big or fancy small wild type is fine) prefer red/white i am putting up a trellis in front of my porch and need something to grow along it, it gets lots of sun and rain water, need something with thorns or some other deterent. and it gets down to -30 in the winter here, any advice at all is welcome. if there is nothing like what i am looking for any one have any other ideas? |

| There is a Canadian Explorer series that is quite winter hardy. I believe 'William Baffin' is often mentioned as having vigor, nasty prickles (thorns) and withstanding zone 4 conditions. |

| These are all reds. Quadra All cold hardy enough to be climbers for you. Disease resistant, bloom and repeat well once established and thorny. |

| Out of the 3 I listed, I'd second the vote with MG for Quadra. If it has a weakness and only if you consider it as such, it is that the blooms tend to nod and droop. However, this is not really much of a problem on an established plant when it is 8+ feet tall and wide and the blooms look down on you. Then it is rather charming. |

| I have to agree with Quadra too, even over the others mordenman listed, for a zone 4 climber. In my zone 5 yard, I would have put Illusion and Quadra in the same camp, but in this bitterly cold and snowless winter, Illusion survived fine but is getting pruned down to about 6" but Quadra sailed through the winter with only cosmetic pruning. It's supposed to be hardy to zone 3, and blooms for me all summer. The blooms are more crimson-pink than a true red but that's true of most "red" roses, particularly climbers. Make sure it's a big and sturdy trellis that can hold a lot of weight. Quadra gets big canes and can tip over free-standing pillars, and it grows to second-story window height pretty easily, even with pruning. Cynthia |
