my natural arbor

Hello all,

Hubby and I have recently built a natural arbor of hickory wood; our property is partially surrounded by woods and we wanted something that blended in with our surroundings.

On either side of the arbor I'll plant 2 climbing roses; there are also some young trees on either side of the arbor for additional support for the roses.

Our property is pretty rocky around the tree line. Any depth I did, I hit multiple rocks of all sizes, mostly large...up to basketball size. Rather than digging deep holes for the roses, I'm thinking of digging about 12-18 inches deep & creating a raised bed around the base of each rose, surrounded by, you guessed it, rocks.

Think this will work? or do roses need to be fully in ground?

Thanks to all for any and all input. :)

Nope, that will work really well as long as there is not a big differentiation between the added growing medium in the raised beds and the existing groundsoil - in fact, in many ways, you have a chance to create an ideal environment from the outset if you are able to source good topsoil. Also, trees are greedy, taking moisture and nutrients from the surrounding area so either amend and irrigate the beds accordingly or choose roses which are closer to the species - as a general rule of thumb, many less hybridised roses are more tolerant of both poor soils and shade. I think you may find many of the older ramblers or wild roses to be more compatible with your woodland surroundings too.

Thank you for your input, campanula :)
I may have to amend the soil slightly to get the right ph level. Roses are coming in about 3 weeks; I'll post pictures once they are in their beds.

Dublinah,

Just so you know... we like pics before, during and after. Would love to see that arbor now.

Good luck with your roses!
