| I have a huge City Of York Rose that was climbing on a lovely trellis. However two floods and an ice storm finally took out the trellis. The rose was so big, it was just a tangled mess of rose and broken trellis. The rose had to be cut back to about 3 feet from the ground to dismantle and remove the trellis and clean up the whole mess, the job required a chainsaw... did I say it was a huge mess?
Anyway. Now I have no trellis, no time to build a new one as big as the old one. Since I'm back to square one with this rose, I thought I might get creative? Think of unique ways to make it climb and things to climb on? I just need help! What happens to climbers if they have nothing to climb on? I'd love some creative feedback. |

| An easy trellis to build is to sink 2 4x4 posts in the ground with cement at the width you want. Then get a length of cattle panel, cut it with bolt cutters to the appropriate length and staple it to the 4x4's. You can paint the 4x4's if you like and can put wooden finials on top [Lowes has these]. This trellis fades into the background, will last for years and is easy and shows off the rose. |

| Hey that sounds like a good idea! The old trellis was really nice but it didn't stand up to 6 feet of water (twice) and then and ice storm. |
|
| I have made supports using 2x4's, rebar, anything that I can find that doesn't cost much. |

| Biggest climber I've ever grown was Constance Spry and I put three 12 foot 4X4's and buried them really deep. I purchased 6 small wood trellises (cheap back then), cut the legs off them and installed them sideways--! on the uprights. Silly I didn't think of cattle panels, since the rose was right next to the dog's play yard which was made of cattle panels--! |

| You could use old wooden ladders or old fencing not being used any more. If they have no where to climb they will grow up words and then hang to the ground. but once they reach the ground again then its a mess. |
