| I've been reading rose descriptions and have come across something I don't understand. For some roses, the description will say 'will get to be six feet tall and six feet wide as a shrub, or 10-12 feet tall as a climber'.
What does this mean? Does it mean that in order to keep it as a shrub one has to trim it, or that if one provides climber supports the rose will in fact grow longer canes, or what? Thank you for any insight. |

| Probably the rose will make some 8-10' canes. If you want a shrub, you cut these in half after blooming and practice "deep deadheading" consistently. After you get a lot of branches developed, the average length of new shoots may decrease somewhat. The same rose could make a large climber because the long canes will produce lateral (secondary) shoots that may be retained and supported. |
