| I don't know if this question is silly or not but here goes.i have a bed with a lot of roses and perrenials. I have a metal trellis I was considering putting gold flame honeysuckle on ( in the rose garden). I love this honeysuckle, and have it somewhere else. It sure attracts a lot of aphids, but I blast them away with my hose. I don't think I have much of an aphid problem with my roses. So if the honeysuckle was near the roses, are they going to stick around the honeysuckle or is it like introducing them to my roses on a silver platter?
I have a backup clematis planned if the honeysuckle isn't a good idea. Thanks for your help! |

| No telling whether the honeysuckle aphids are a species that attacks roses. If you haven't had much trouble controlling them in the past, I wouldn't worry about it. |

| I agree with Michaelg. From what I read, aphids tend to be host specific, meaning rose aphids stick to roses and honeysuckle aphids stick to honeysuckles. I suspect the fact that your honeysuckle is heavily infested and your roses are not is evidence that this is true. |

| Do you have any plants to bring in the ladybugs? They'll take care of your aphid problem :) |
|
| Thanks everyone! I had no idea they were specific to different plants! How neat. I did remember that when aphids get on my skin I get incredibly itchy very fast, so I realized maybe I don't want to walk under an arbor where they will bother me. Does anyone else get itchy from them? Ll, I don't know if I grow anything to attract ladybugs. I grow mostly lilies, daylilys,Veronica's , catmint and purple coneflowers back there. What do you suggest for ladybugs? I don't even recall seeing many in my garden, tho I'm not much on the lookout for them. |

| We have lots of ladybugs here. They are all over the basement in the winter. I have a big patch of dill that ladybugs, praying mantis and toads like to hang out (these all are beneficial critters). I had zero aphids in my present garden for the past 12 years. However, in my previous house in a less windy and less herbs location, by using high-nitrogen fertilizer I had the worst aphids infestation back then - and that garden didn't have any ladybugs. Green Lacewings give birth to larvae called "aphids lions" - these can really devour aphids. Calendula wild flower is the perennial that I have seen the most green lacewings coming for the nectar. Calendula sowns itself, and it's the best perennial I have seen - it's also my Mom's favorite plant in her land in Michigan. |
