| After cutting back my knockouts, some of the new growth leaves are very wiry And very light in color. It seems this type of growth is isolated on just a few trunks. The rest of the rose bush is growing healthy. this definitely isn't normal. Any help is appreciated.
If I knew how to post a picture on here you could see what I'm talking about. |

| Go to photobucket or one of those sites and post pictures. Abnormal growth can result from a terrible virus, Rose Rosette Disease, that calls for removing all the affected plants quickly Trying to guess what you mean by "wiry," it might be the sort of growth that comes in spring when rose plants have absorbed Round Up, possibly back in the fall. |

| Thanks. http://s1161.photobucket.com/albums/q511/Jordank465/Snapbucket/ This first photo, especially, shows the wiry, thin leaves. |

It is not clear from your name in what state you garden. This could be helpful in many cases, different regions could have different issues. First picture seems like a weed killer drift to me. Second picture with light colored leaves, often you can get this kind of simptoms on a cane which is not healthy and had to be pruned, but was't. Canes with brown pith often produce this kind of growth. Winter damaged and not pruned canes can result in such growth, but this is probably not the case for you considering the size of leaves on your roses you are somewhere in the south. Olga |

| I agree with Olga. The wiry leaves look like herbicide damage ... herbicide doesn't have to be Round-Up. It could be contact with broadleaf lawn weed killer. It looks minor. I'd cut off the damaged portions and see what happens. I'll be things will be fine. |

| It doesn't look like Rosette disease, which at any rate isn't common in your area. Interveinal chlorosis, yellowing/reddening between green veins--this indicates a nutrient deficiency in the leaves which can be caused by herbicide damage, waterlogging, or an imbalance in the soil (high pH, excess of some fertilizer nutrient, shortage of some nutrient). Chlorosis with narrow leaves cupped upward can be zinc deficiency. This can cause shoots to stop growing without setting flower buds and produce multiple side shoots (witches' broom). You could look for that. However, it could also be caused by mild herbicide damage. You could start by following hartwood's advice. You might consider getting a soil test as well. Do you have sandy soil? Have you added a lot of any amendment such as lime, excess phosphate? |

| I've had knockouts with RRD and I can't say for sure what this is. It's probably not RRD, but RRD can look like a lot of different weird things. My advice is to cut out the bad cane, and give the rose some time and see if it gets worse. Herbicide damage should improve over time. RRD gets worse. Contrary to what many people say, you don't have to panic and rip out a rose if you think it has RRD. You can take your time and make sure that's what the malady is. I have it off and on in my garden and I've gotten used to it. I just cut out bad stems and throw them away. |

| I have something going on with my knockout too... The Aphids got to it but I was spraying them off every for a week and know the left side of my rose is sick looking. It has been like that for a few years now on that side where the other side is healthy and growing. I even pruned it to see if that will stimulate better growth but so far not so good... Sick side Healthy side
I will take a picture of the whole bush in a little bit when it warms up :) |
