Rose winter die back

I have a rose with major die back and another with very little. They are both three year old roses, own root cuttings from the same parent, and planted three feet apart. Why did one die back and not the other? I'm at a loss to explain it.

Even just three feet apart one may have a different wind and/or sun exposure than the other. The up wind one may be protecting the down wind one.
