Looking for companion suggestion

I have a rose that came with the house. It is not a favorite of mine but it does bloom beautifully once a year and it gets absolutely huge. It's hardy and I can tell you that because I have tried to dig it up at least three times and I have used concentrated round up on it also.

Short of getting a backhoe in I think I'm going to have to learn to live with it. It is coming up nicely again even though it was dug out below the ground again in the fall.

Ok so it can grow Id guess at least as tall as a one level house because it was up to my porch. It gets quite bushy and it is thorny. I chopped it to the ground before digging it up.

It has pretty pink blooms one time ayear, it grows on the sw corner of my house and agian it gets HUGE.

So I'd like something that doesn't sit there as a bunch of blank green most of the growing season so I'm wondering if I can plant another rose with it so they can grow together and hopefully the new one will add some color through the season. It has to be hardy and vigorous enough to compete with this monster.

Is that even anything that might be an option?

Sounds like the ideal situation for a clematis.

Sounds like your rose could be Multiflora root stock maybe. Very tough and vigorous growing rose which is why it's used as root stock. It's hard to say if you could get another rose to grow with it. It might just crowd out anything else. But Mike's suggestion of a clematis should work. A lot of people grow clems and climbers together and it's lovely. Make sure you get a clematis that will rebloom through the season and you'll have the look you're going for.

Yes, a clematis is a great solution. Or the backhoe... ;)

I am wondering if it might be a Cecile Brunner rose? We tried to kill ours for years-finally gave up. We love it now-its up over the roof-and hangs out in the front.

I propped it up with stakes-its like a giant weeping willow with roses on it once a year. Ours has thorns. I have my potting bench under it, a little garden where I can grow hydrangeas, azaleas and begonias. I trained an angel wing begonia to go up the trunk and branches of the rose. I have jars with candles hanging in there too. The canes get about 10 feet long.

Good luck! You gotta love anything that wants to be part of your life so badly. :)
