| I have kept two rose bushes in my unheated garage for the past winter season - Blue Moon and Sexy Rexy. We have experienced a very mild winter here in southwestern Ontario.
Sexy Rexy has quite significant new growth - Blue Moon is just beginning to green up. I was wondering what the process is for pruning at this time. I was wondering if I should wait for consistent above freezing temperatures to place the roses out on the patio. This is the first year for us at this house. Previously, in our last house I did not have any roses in containers and did not have a garage. Thank you for any suggestions or advice, Kind regards,

| If the plants are kept inside, new growth will be spindly. If placed outside, new growth on outside plants will be injured at around 27 F or -2 C. Woody canes can take 0-10 F; however, the root ball can be damaged at these temperatures without protection. You may need to put wheels under them and schlep them in and out until sometime in April. Another approach might be to remove growth buds as they appear, but it may be too late. I prefer to keep potted roses outside and protect them there (against the foundation, and under a leaf pile for the coldest part of the winter only). |

| The best bet is to take them out during the day and back in at night. It's work but it does work. If you don't want to do that and you have a window in your garage at least put them in the window so they will get some light. And keep them watered. If they're growing they'll need water. As for pruning I'd wait until you do your other roses. |
