Vintage One-of-a-Kind Sale

Hi folks

There's already a post about this on the Antique Roses forum, but not everyone checks both forums. Vintage is selling out some very small numbers of unique roses and you'll want to catch them now if you can, since they're (sadly) going out of business. The roses seem to have made it up to their website at www.vintageroses.com, so if you don't see something from the list below on the "available" list it might mean that someone else beat you to the one or two roses available of that variety. If it's available, you can order it through usual web orders and they have great products.

Let us know if you need any enabling! I have an embarrassing number of these roses so I'll list a few I highly recommend:

Senegal - a great hardy TRULY dark red climber - one of the few that's actually as burgundy as billed. Does great in zone 5 and I have it weaving among paler climbers

Brown Velvet - a surprisingly hardy in zone 5 russet rose, not all that frequent a bloomer for me but great color even in heat

Lili Marlene - a stunningly red rose - no blue to this one at all - and it stays small for me in my zone

Marchesa Boccella - a very reliable rose that's a great introduction to old garden roses - light pink and fluffy and pretty tall for me, seems to be hardy and healthy in a variety of locations

Karl Herbst - I got this one from Vintage a year or two ago and it has really impressed me with its vigor and true red color. It wants to bloom a lot even as a young HT rose, and looks to be at least 4-5 feet tall

Neptune - a great option for a lavender - not quite as hardy & healthy as Poseidon but nowhere near the wimps most lavenders are

Nigrette - the single darkest burgundy rose I've ever seen, actually earns the title of nearly black. A totally scrawny little bush and needs lots of food, but it blooms fairly often and is at least root hardy for me in zone 5

Patsy Cline - to die for white rose with pink edges. I'm hoping mine I bought from Vintage last year has weathered the winter, or I'm going to kick myself for not ordering a replacement

Spiced Coffee - a terrific mauvy-russet edge on whitish base rose that thrives in my zone 4 pocket of my yard, Frequent fluffly blooms on a healthy plant for me.

Twice in a Blue Moon, Shi-Un - not as hardy or healthy as Neptune but both have survived in less than ideal locations for me in zone 5

Illusion - one of the most reliable and constantly blooming climbers for me, equivalent to Quadra. No dieback and steady healthy crimson blooms on a sturdy climber. Great for zone 5 and I think even zone 4

Just keeping everyone updated - Vintage sent out the roses that are still left after the first rush and that's posted below. Among these, I see an additional recommendation for The Prince's Trust that I got from Vintage a few years ago, and it's a red climber that very enthusiastically wants to grow. It was probably the biggest band plant I've ever seen at nearly 4 feet long, and it put on another 5-6 feet in its first year. It's a very healthy happy climber in my zone 5.

I was wondering if you could update on Setina. I ordered one from ARE, but am unsure about its health and rebloom. I'm in Cincinnati.

    Hi Vaporvac

I never grew Setina, so I'm no help on that one. I didn't know ARE had it, but it's nice to see some of these more uncommon roses still available through other sources, after the sad demise of Vintage.

arrrrrgh! Just what I needed when I'm looking for some rarities: a reminder that my favorite nursery of all time is gone, lol.

Oh! I'm a dunderhead. This post came up in a search and I thought those were roses you had ordered. That's what I get for skimming, although I was really impressed that you had ordered so many! :)

I read in one post that it's very hardy and drought tolerant once established. Just trying to find info. on blooming and BS so I know if it has my name on it. I was quite taken with it for some reason. Thank you for replying.

No worries, Vaporvac - looks like you'll have to clue us in on Setina if you order it!

And Fig_insanity, I know what you mean. I saw the subject line and for a fleeting minute I thought Gregg might have discovered some rare roses growing in some forgotten Vintage spot that were still for sale. Sadly, I saw it was my own post and not the case at all. We continue to grieve the loss of a fine nursery.
