fabulous( sort of) foliage

I know I should not waffle on about aesthetic virtues without proof of the pudding (camera fail - I truly mean to get to grips with this now that my garden actually looks half decent and not the usual chaotic plant storage area). Anyway, I have a few roses which put out spring growth in lovely clarets and plums, bronze and limes but a recent variety - Alissar, Princess of Phoenicia (A hulthemia from Harkness)seems quite extraordinary. The colour is deeply, evenly maroon with a gentle satin sheen. Not really sure whether it is lovely or not - I am not really fond of the light sapping qualities of a lot of dark-leafed foliage and have completely failed to understand the fad for 'black' plants, but the colour looks astonishing to me.

I enjoy seeing the rainbow of colors the roses display on the new spring growth too. There are all kinds of shades of reds, plums and greens mixed together. And I have to agree with you on the black flower craze! I think they're ugly and they do nothing for the garden but create dark patches. My cousin is crazy for them and gets every new one that comes out. When you drive by her yard the place looks very dull because the black flowers don't show up at all. Give me color and lots of it any day of the week!

RE: fabulous( sort of) foliage

Hi Suzy and Seil: I'm also a colorful foliage freak. I like the reddish new foliage of red roses, although I am not crazy about red roses. I like the pretty foliage of Kim Rupert's thornless creations.

I don't like the ugly grayish, matte foliage of Wise Portia. The upper branches turned black after the winter, but the lower half is green. I wish it died completely, since I'm not crazy about its foliage, its smaller bloom, fleeting fragrance in warm weather, and gaudy bright purple bloom. I fell out of love!

Alissar is a nice name - got to check that rose out. Thanks, Suzy. You are right that Paul Neyron looks like a dog. I got him in a band, his thornless stem is the only redeeming virtue.
