I did a search on this but didn't get much help. Where do I get material on pruning broken roots on one which has just been received and waiting to be planted? Appreciate any help--like just how much to prune, etc? Barb

I cut of any broken root bits, but usualy keep all the root as intact as possible. My experience has been the only real advantage of pruning roots is to prevent them from getting bend every which way if the pot or planting hole is to small. I just get a large enough pot or dig a bit deeper or winder. Roots happily spread downwards and horisontally, but doesn't like being bent upwards. Keep bareroots moist and it helps to protected against direct sunlight for a while, until they get leafed out.

Nothing special, just prune off the broken root about 1/4" from the break,& plant them.

Yes, just cut whatever is broken, where ever it is broken. When they're harvested from the fields, they're simply hacked level with power shears, like hedge clippers. It was amazing watching a line or workers with conveyers in front of them simply whacking the roots off as they slid down the line at the Wasco rose harvest years ago. Kim

You could try additional mycchorhizal fungi (available as granules) as a fast increaser of root efficiency - within 4 weeks, the rooting surface area will have doubled.

Actually I have left them alone on the theory that the break, which occurred in November, has healed, while a fresh cut could provide access for crown gall bacteria.

Either way works. What do you think happens to roots accidentally severed by shovels and underground critters? They get broken and damaged all the time. WE are the ones who are OCD about making sure anything damaged is removed, not Nature. If it's viable and not infected with a damaging pathogen, she simply has it continue doing its job. Kim
