Noisette on a Mister Lincoln?

Hi! I'm new here, I've been lurking awhile and as I'm watching my (presumed) Mister Lincoln set out his first buds of the season I realized I still didn't have an answer about something odd that happened last year:

I bought a house last year (yay!) and it came with some poor abused roses in the back walkway (not large enough to count as a whole yard). One is a tall Red Hybrid Tea with Mister Lincoln-ish blooms, but no scent. I believe the lack of scent was because the poor plant got almost no direct sun. It struggled on and performed magnificently given its situation and then, around late July, my Mister Lincoln threw off a beautiful, full, four-quatered rose, like a Noisette.

Does anyone know what on earth happened?
Thank you all for all the wonderful advice you've posted all over these forums- I've found something someone said two or even three years ago can still be really, really helpful!

Welcome! Was the bloom still red? If you look on the web site Help Me Find / roses, and search Mr. Lincoln, you will find 2 pictures of it out of dozens that look sort of quartered. I would guess it is caused by the weather. Keep your eyes out, and if yours does it again take a picture and post it here - it will keep people talking.

Hi Newgirl, congratulations on the house! First, if your "Mr. Lincoln" had no scent at all, it's probably not a Mr. Lincoln. Severe growing conditions can cause a lot of issues, but complete loss of any scent from a highly scented rose isn't generally one of them. Very likely, what you have is a red rose which can produce the flower shape you observed, it just hadn't gotten enough light and heat to produce it until July. It will take some research to figure out what the actual variety is, but I strongly doubt it's a Mr. Lincoln. You may want to grub around the base of the plant to see if it still has a name tag of some sort on it. Good luck! Kim

Kim my Mr.Lincoln only has scent very rarely. Most of the time I smell one I get a big disappointment. It gets morning sun and sits next to a fabulous Memorial Day that smells great consistently. I have often wondered what is wrong. I grow Oklahoma and Papa M. and get wonderful perfume from them.Chrysler Imperial gives me great fragrance most days. Why I almost never smell anything on Mr. L is a big mystery to me. It is not the best bloomer and quickly changes to a pinkish color in warm weather for me. I was thinking of removing him as I have the "brothers".
Mine was from Palatine and not a weakling body bag rose or anything like that. Would you suggest try again or try something else. If I got quartered flowers I would probably keep it.

I know it still has the price tag on it but if there was a name it's rubbed off over time.
My plan is to carefully track what each cane produces over the summer and keep the ones with the best flowers. If it really is a quartered-flower producer I'm a lucky, lucky girl! Thanks everyone!

Hi! Still lurking and new to roses. I just bought a Mr. Lincoln and a Camelot. Could someone tell me what is a quartered flower producer? Sorry if I've hijacked a thread. Thanks, Christy :)

Christy, on the Roses forum it's fine to start new threads (just don't try it on the Laundry forum - lol).

"Quartered" rose blooms are divided into several sections with a lot of petals. I'll link to a photo of one below:

Here is a link that might be useful: quartered rose bloom

Kitty, temperature, humidity, wind can all affect perception of scent. Various scents volatize and evaporate at different temps and levels of humidity. It's entirely possible the scent from Mr. Lincoln either hasn't become "smellable" when you try it or that it's already evaporated. Though they may smell similarly to us, each rose has differing components in varying amounts and these combinations can easily cause a highly scented rose to appear unscented in some conditions as well as one which is felt to be unscented to sometimes express a perceivable scent.

Gene Boerner used to check for fragrance in his seedlings by placing flowers under his hat where the heat and humidity from his head were higher, releasing the oils and alcohols from the blooms so he could smell them. Cutting your roses in bud, early in the day as they are beginning to open then allowing them to open in the house should permit you to check whether they possess and express scent and to what degree that scent can be detected by your nose. To mine, Mr. Lincoln is one of a handful of modern roses which always has a good nose full of smell, being very strong and lasting, where many others evaporate fairly quickly. It could well be where you are is too cool and/or wet for Lincoln's combination of oils and alcohols to be fully expressed on the "normal" days. He might require more heat to fully smell.

The only way to determine if others are going to smell strongly in your conditions is to smell them in similar situations. There have been several I'm used to either smelling well or not finding scent from, which have been fully the reverse when encountered in a friend's colder, wetter Torrance garden. The nose remained the same, but the conditions varied greatly. Kim
