| So I am just one year into growing roses. I have all David Austin so far. I have only put one in the ground. An Abraham Darby. It is very healthy and has several buds and two huge flowers on it now. I also have a Glamis Castle. It is in a large pot and also looks very healthy.. has a few buds this year as well.
I was so encouraged I ordered 2 more (Chamblees). A Golden Celebration and Tradescant. They came in today and I realized I really don't have any idea about actually building a bed. Looking at pix of rose beds confuses me. Some are grouped close and don't have much space between them (I like this look the best and don't have a huge area in my yard to plant them anyway) and some are really spaced out with room to actually walk between them. Does it matter how close they are actually planted? I think here they grow fairly fast each season. I have SO many questions! |

| They look much better with some space to grow into. By year 4 and 5 they are really taking off, quadrupuling in size. Don't cut your Glamis hard unless there are dead parts to remove. She was a slower grower for me. |

| I don't grow either one of those roses, so I'm useless. Whether they are grafted or not will make a difference. |

| As Kitty said they will get bigger and fill in the gaps to some extent. The rule of thumb is 36 inches apart from center to center of the roses. This allows room for them to spread out as they mature and air circulation around the plant that is supposed to help keep fungal diseases down. Personally it's never made much difference on that score in my garden. However, Austin's own catalog often says to buy 3 of a kind and plant them at 18 inches apart for a fuller look. So I think it's a matter of taste. I have more roses than room so I often plant mine closer together because I'm always trying to squeeze one more in! |

| If you give yourself a little space between roses, it gives you room to mulch, weed, deadhead, etc. I don't need to tell you about the risks associated with squeeeezing between rose bushes! |
