Help me find a climbing rose!

Hi everyone! I'm new to roses and I'm getting overwhelmed by all the different kinds available so maybe someone with experience can better direct me.

For reference, I am in eastern Sacramento/west Carmichael area. (not sure what zone that is)

I have a south facing wall that is to the side of my house and runs alonside the sidewalk, so I would really like to plant a climbing rose to add some interest to that area. Im mainly looking for something that is a dark magenta pink and preferably not a once-bloomer, and has good flower show. Disease-resistant would be nice too since I'm so new to roses but I'm willing to learn how to care for anything as long as it produces what I'm looking for.

The only variety that seems to meet the color qualification so far is "High Society" but I don't know where to get it or if it will work where I live. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and learning from all your experience :)

Also, I'm happy to post a photo of the location but I'm not sure how to do it! Please do let me know if that would be helpful!

I wish you would accept Lemon-White. I would say, Go to the Sacramento City Cemetery Open Garden and Rose Sale on April 21, and buy "Like Lamarque." (Which is actually 'Lamarque,' a Tea-Noisette)

I simply can't imagine anything lovelier, and this photo WAS taken in Sacramento.

Thanks Jeri!

I'm highly considering this now just because it is so darn gorgeous. My only issue is that the wall I want to trail it on is a creamy beige color, and I was really hoping to find something that would pop.

Can you tell me anything about caring for Lamarque? Is it a rebloomer?

Also, have you bought from the SacCemetary Rose sale before? Do you know if they sell any Tree Roses? I'm dying to find a Neptune in tree form as well. :)

Dandy --

The roses at the cemetery are all 'heritage roses,' so you won't find moderns there -- well, I think they have some, this year-- but you get things not easily available elsewhere.
I'm almost always there for this sale. Can't be, this year -- but IF I were there, this is the rose I'd bring home. Houses change color over time. Roses can be eternal. :-)

Look for Reve d'Or, if they have it this year -- I've bought three!

Dandy - look up 'Ragged Robin' (Gloire des Rosomanes) on Help Me Find /Roses. Is that the color you want? If it is Jeri should be able to tell you if it will work in your climate. I would think it would. It is evidently a china, and they love heat. HMF says it can get 15 ft high.

Jeri,
I have never saw Lamarque look that great before. Thank you for sharing that photo.

Lookin -- I think 'Lamarque' succeeds best when it is left to its own devices, and not subjected to a lot of pruning.

I gather that this plant was, subsequently and unfortunately pruned hard. It'll take it a while to get back to what it was.

I should mention two other roses of climbing habit that succeed well in the Sacramento area ...

The gold-buff-pink 'Reve d'Or':
'Reve d'Or' (Sacramento, CA)

and the unfortunately named 'Golden Showers' (here photographed near Woodland, some miles NW of Sacramento:

I've seen the latter used to landscape a Central California Highway Rest Stop. Pretty tough.

I second Reve d'Or. I love this rose, even though mine is getting a slow start.

Hi DandyLioness, there's lots of great roses to choose from ;-)

Etude is an old tried and tested variety with fragrance, rebloom and healthy growth. It should do well in your area. It is often a bit too pink for some, but when magenta-pink is in question it might be ideal. Rosarium Uetersen is a very good rose too, bright clear pink color, almost tropical-like, and healthy reliable rebloom. Both well worth researching how they do in your area.

Best of Luck
