| I'm trying to update my database by adding zones (so I can be more organized for winter protection this coming year). Many of the Sports and Seedlings don't have zones listed on HMF, and they are just defaulting to 6b. For example, Dixieland Linda doesn't have a zone listed, but Aloha does. Since Dixieland Linda is a sport of Aloha, does it automatically have the same hardiness? What about seedlings?
Thanks, Tammy |

| It may be a good guess that Dixieland Linda has similar hardiness to Aloha, but not a guaranty. If the only mutation is color, then they should be virtually identical, but other mutations MAY have occurred, too. Until sufficient reports come in to verify hardiness differences, there is no way to know for sure. As for seedlings, no. While they have similar familial traits, no two are identical, just as no two people from the same family are. Seedlings of a cold hardy rose may be more cold hardy than those from a less cold hardy rose, but they won't automatically be AS cold hardy as the parents. Some could be a bit more if it inherited the necessary genes to provide that extra resistance to cold. Some may be much less cold hardy. It all depends upon what genes that particular rose inherited. Again, until tested and proven, there is no way to know for sure. Kim |
