Economical Rose Fertilizing!

I went ahead an got a free soil test--they said that I had sandy loam that just needed a bit of lime and lots of nitrogen. I'm sure that all the leaf compost I've been putting down to raise the beds has something to do with the great soil test results. So, all I really need is something cheap with lots of nitrogen. Since my wife wants the lawn fertilized--the answer is Scotts 32-0-4, which comes in at around $1 a pound--I only need about 1-1/4 pounds to fertilize 200+ roses! About 8" down is a solid layer of clay, so the fertilizer really doesn't go anywhere. Someone at the Yankee District Rose conference suggested using a rotary hand spreader--since I already have one--that is what I used to evenly spread out the high nitrogen lawn fertilizer throughout the rose beds.

Yes, I use a generic from Ace Hardware. In either case, it's mostly urea. The danger is using too much. You need only about 1 TB/sq. yard, maybe rounded but not heaping. It can be reapplied every 4-8 weeks depending on drainage. It can be put on top of the mulch and watered in with a full watering. Most of the N is highly soluble.

Excessive amounts will burn plants.
