i am wanting to get a yellow rose for my mother in law as a gift. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get? I have sunsprite and I love it but the beetles also loved it last year. I also read about a new one called Sunshine Daydream that is supposed to be hardy,

If you are looking for a yellow rose that is beetle-resistant, good luck! From what I hear about Japanese Beetles (we rarely see any at all here in Kansas), they like ALL roses, regardless of color--so if you find a resistant one, prepare to become rich as rosarians across the country flock to your door seeking the "solution."

However, if you want a good yellow in other respects, Julia Childs often receives rave reviews on this forum. I have a bunch of yellow minis--Sweet Diana--that are most charming and disease-resistant. I also admire greatly my Austin shrub called Molineux, but it is more of a yellow/gold/apricot blend, at least in some of its moods--but then blends are always my favorites.

Are you more interested in hybrid teas or floribundas or what type of rose?

If you want a yellow rose that won't need to be sprayed for blackspot, I'd suggest 'Carefree Sunshine." It has single flowers (5-10 petals) but lots of them. The attractive, leafy shrub grows 4'x4' or larger. Another option with more "normal" flowers is 'Prairie Harvest.'

I like all types of roses. Im really tempted to get Julia Childs. I forgot about Carefree Sunshine. I bet it will do well here too because I have Carefree Celebration. The blooms are not very big but like you said michaelg there are lots of them. Less petals are not my favorite but the carefree I have is really beautiful because it just does so well. I may have to buy these two for myself as well. I said I wasn't gonna buy as many this year but who am I kidding! I'm fairly new to roses(only have about 30)but I love them so much, I plan on having lots more. I'm planning on being smarter this year and buying the ones more suited for my area instead of what looks pretty. I've had a few disapointing experiences.

Julia Child will probably need spraying if you are in the East.

In my niche of the East (coastal Carolina), 'Julia Child' has healthy foliage. Must be a micro-climate thing . . .

In which zone does your mother in law live? You mentioned hardy. In zone 5a, the Austin roses Charlotte and Jude the Obscure survive the winter without protection. I do not spray.

RE: yellow roses

A number of yellow roses are resistant to some strains of blackspot but susceptible to one strain. 'Sunsprite' was resistant for ten years in my garden but became susceptible when the wrong strain got established. This might be the case with 'Julia Child.' But 'Prairie Harvest' and 'Carefree Sunshine' seem to be widely resistant or nearly so. (May get some Cercospora spot, which does less damage.)

Julia does spot some for me but on the whole is much healthier than a lot of others I have. It normally only spots near the ground and does not defoliate.
