Pat Austin or Lady Emma Hamilton

I only have room for one orange/copper rose. I'm looking for a fragrant English rose, I'm torn between Pat Austin & Lady Emma Hamilton. Anyone have experience growing either or both or something different? Any input is appreciated, especially in zone 9.

I grow Pat Austin and have been very happy with her. She has a nice repeat for me and her blooms don't ball. That being said, my zone is quite different than yours, so take my opinion with a grain of salt :)

I grow both. I like both. You should plant them both very close together if you don't have space. It is very difficult to choose one over the other.

But I would say Pat Austin looks better and Emma Hamilton smells better (fruity). Pat is gold in form and demands. Emma is very sweet and nice.

I have both. It depends on how much rainfall you get. Pat Austin is a waterhog, as reported in Help me Find comments. We had 49" rain last year, but I don't like Pat Austin, her blooms shatter and have a grayish tinge when old. She smells like tobacco in acidic potting soil. She smells better in my alkaline clay, but nothing to rave about. Pat is puny and best grafted.

I love Lady Emma Hamilton: better repeat, wonderful fruit scent (I like her scent more than Jude the Obscure). Her leaves are glossy and disease-free. Her thorns are wider space. The stem can turn reddish and pretty. Hoovb in California praised Lady Emma Hamilton in her blog "A Piece of Eden".

Sounds like Lady Emma Hamilton is the winner then! Thank you for the input! I prefer smell over form any day :)

I get a day out of Pats flowers if I'm lucky. Wouldn't give her any space in the garden again.

Another vote for Lady Emma--I grew both, shoveled Pat when she got RRD and don't intend to replant. Pat's blooms shatter almost immediately here (so rapidly I have few photographs of last seasons blooms). They are tea scented, although again, gone so quickly I rarely got to enjoy them.

Lady Emma has a wonderful range of peach/apricot/orange tones that change depending on weather and the scent is so wonderful--strong and fruity, almost citrus, which matches the flowers to a T. I lost one to RRD years back and replanted a replacement, so definitely one not to live without in my opinion.

If you are in southern Nevada, plenty of afternoon shade is probably going to be mandatory. The Austins are generally very delicate flowers that do not tolerate hot dry weather.

Something to keep in mind.

Thanks hoovb, yes I'm in Vegas, I'll keep that in mind, do you think deep watering will counter that sensitivity, all the HTs grow so well I have to prune pretty vigorously, but to be honest I've never seen any English roses in town, ok now I'm worried! LOL

Grow it on the east side of the house or east side of a tree. That will give it some shade cover during the hottest part of the afternoon.

I have Pat Austin and Love it. It smells really good and the blooms last a while for me. It does get a little blackspot here though. I don't have Lady Emma Hamilton but I may get it this year, TNY78, you are close to me. Maybe it's our climate here. I live on the border of East TN,

Lady Emma is a good bet. Pat Austin always looked at the ground, even staked. Drove me nuts.

I grew Pat ages ago and was pretty unimpressed. Lovely color but not much else. I want to buy Lady Emma as well, she seems very promising but cannot figure out who's selling her own-root...

Lovemysheltie:

DavidAustinRoses.com sells LEH own root, but they are sold out for this year, you can pay for one this year and they will deliver next year.

2 cents a few days late:

I have no experience with Pat Austin, but Lady Emma is a absolutely brilliant here in Phoenix. I have 3 planted in a dry stream, which means they get *reflected* heat -- they do have late afternoon shade from the house, but the heat is merciless. The new foliage is spectacular purple and bronze, it blooms constantly (with a rest in the worst of the summer, of course) and the fragrance is even better than Jude.

I planted them grafted bare-root from Austin 2 springs ago. For comparison, 3 Carding Mill planted at the same time and in slightly better circumstances (in a "normal" bed rather than a dry stream) are just "blah." They actually might not get quite *enough* sun in their location, but neither the foliage nor the bloom is anything close to Lady Emma.

This is from 2011, one year in the ground (click for big):

I had 1 grafted and 2 own root Pat Austins at the home I lived in around 10 years ago. When the plants were small, they were unable to support the large flowers, which drooped badly, staring at the ground. However, after around the 3rd year, the plant was able to support the flowers and was very impressive. Each grew to be an attractive 5 ft x 5 ft bushy shrub. I remember seeing it in full bloom a few times and the flowers obscured most of the foliage. I wish that I had taken a photo as it was quite spectacular. I now have 6 Pat Austin plants at my new home.

I planted Lady Emma Hamilton last year. It is growing nicely-I hope that it does as well for me as it has done for others.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get Lady Emma Hamilton for my orange & Jude the Obscure for my cream and give them a try, ty sparklynnrose you tipped the scale for me! If they do well I plan on SP some more HT's...LOL
