I have been doing some reading in selecting roses to add to my garden and find many roses say inn warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. What do they consider a warmer climate? I am zone 7b, South Carolina and I did have to cut my roses back alot this year due to black spot and wow have they grown in beautifully. Now I'm wondering if I am a "warmer climate" where I should be cutting my roses back by one third every year?

It depends on the rose and how you want it to grow. We are in the same zone/area and I do cut roses back to 1/3rd when spring pruning or sometimes after the first flush. But usually not every year. Unless it's a bush that gets a lot of dieback or I want to keep it small. This is usually HTs, not teas or climbers or other roses.

I've definitly learned it won't hurt the plant. I think I'll follow what you do, perhaps not cut it back every year but judge by what it looks like. My rose is Courageous, and in reading about it on different sites some call it a climber, and others call it a shrub rose. I got it from Heirloom an they do say it can be either. Originally I tied it as a climber, but I love the way it is growing now after I had to cut it way back and think I will now treat it as a shrub rose.
