Pill / Rolly Polly / Potato Bugs

I have a ton of potato bugs and its driving me insane! Are they beneficial to the soil or are they just there.

At night my porch is covered with them and one night we were outside standing on the back porch and I didn't have shoes on and I stepped on a lot and I got mad so I put on shoes and went on a squishing rampage.

In my garden if I pick anything up there are tons them crawling around trying to find a cool place.

They're part of the process of turning dead plant material into soil. They won't harm your roses

I have a ton of them that hang out in cool, moist places near my rose bed. While they tend to give me the creeps a bit, I haven't found that they have done any harm so I leave them be.

As Karl mentioned, I think they primarily feast on dead or decaying plant material.

Pill bugs will eat your pansies and other annual bedding plants, so if that is an issue you may wish to take action against them. Otherwise, as has been stated, they feast on decaying material. Kim
