Replacement for Angel Face?

| I'm planning to move our itty bitty Angel face to a smaller spot later this year. She is only about 18" tall/wide and looks out of place in our row of tall roses
I like her color though. Can you recommend a great rose that blooms in a similar color on a bush at least 4' tall or larger?
Many thanks! |

I too like Angel Face for its color and petal form but it is disappointing in size and display. Have you gone to Help Me Find - Roses? You can do an Advance Search and put in the color you want, like mauve or lavender, and get all the roses with that color. Hope you find one you like. Clare |

I have Paradise which is a lovely mauve with a red edge that gets pretty tall for me.

How about the lovely disease resistant hybrid tea-- The Mc Cartney rose? Its gets tall about 6' by about 3-4' wide. Lovely pink colored roses and its fragrant.

Jenn, I have a couple of pinks that get about 4ft tall. Their habit is a little different from that of Angel Face. Else Poulsen and (Mevrow) Nathalie Nypels are both very showy and repeat well. My favorite is Else, a single that stops traffic. She is designated a Texas Earthkind rose so you know she has stood the test of time -- at least in our dry climate. She is rather tall and slim. Nathalie is an ever-blooming polyantha that has lush foliage. You might want to look these up. Neither of these has any disease problems for me. Lou

'Neptune' is a good lavender. What about 'Angel Face' on fortuniana? That might give it more vigor. Generally lavenders do not have a lot of vigor. 'Heirloom' is probably about as vigorous as a lavender gets.

I have a very vigorous Blue Girl; the blooms are much lighter than Angel Face but more of a formal shape, with heavenly fragrance and she's nearly thornless. Seil's right about Paradise. I've only seen a few Angel Face blooms in person, but each time they have been mauve with the reddish-pink edges, just like Paradise. Both my Paradise and Paradise Found grow like monsters. Neptune is a lovely deep lavender as well. I'd say it's closest in bloom form and color to Angel Face.

I've had several Angel Faces that died quite well for me! I have had good growth and flowers from Sweetness. Mine is still young, just in the ground 13 months, but it's putting out big basals this spring and I think it'll be vigorous. It is also blooming more this season than it did last year. The fragrance is most intense.

I like Neptune too, and Love Potion if you can find it.

These are the best for SoCal in my experience -- these pics are from my garden: Neptune (6 footer) Heirloom (4 footer) Blueberry Hill (3 footer, but this is TeJoe, it's striped sport, which is the one I grow here. But the solid color one is nice too.) Or, if you'd prefer a darker, redder purple, try Della Reese, which is a great So Cal rose also (but you can it ONLY at Armstrong Garden Centers). (6 footer) |

We're not SoCal here(SoId?), but we do have hot, dry summers. I second Blueberry Hill as a vigorous lavender/mauve that loves to bloom. It's not so tall for me as wide. A great rose. Another quite bluish lavender(rather than pinkish) rose that is fairly tall, and not so wide is Kordes' Blue Bayou. It has exquisite blooms, but they don't last in the heat. Still, it's vigorous and lovely. Diane |

Another suggestion for planting NEPTUNE, Jenn. It might be just the rose that you are looking for! :)

Does anyone have garden photos of Neptune? I've heard mixed reviews on its disease resistence and hardiness. I have both Blueberry Hill and Heirloom (waiting for both to flush). Both are intensely healthy, hardy plants. BH is more of a large shrub - as wide as it is high. For me it has absolutely no fragrance. Low pedal count, so always displaying its gold stamens. Heirloom is more of an HT shape - taller than wide. It is one of my garden favorites. Fragrance is really intense, sweet, lovely. Blooms are gorgeous. Personally I like it much more than BH, mostly because of fragrance and bloom form. I have Angel Face too - just in it's 2nd year. It is light on foliage, but absolutely covered in wonderful fragrant blooms. And so far very healthy for me, but still early to tell.

Thank you all! So many beautiful choices... so little space. :-) The roses are in a row at the top of a retaining wall. I'm trying to coordinate the colors to complement the plants growing below them (in front of the wall), and also with the roses themselves. On the left of AF is Joyfulness, a tall apricot-blend HT. On the right of AF is.... was.... the late Granada; I'm afraid the burrito canes are not taking. :-( So, I also want to replace the Granada with another Granada or a rose with a similar color and scent.

Pat Henry of Roses Unlimited recommends the Kordes floribunda 'Poseidon,' a pretty flower, said to be fairly fragrant and highly disease resistant. Jenn has more latitude than those of us in the East, where most mauve roses will be ravaged by disease unless sprayed. I have Blueberry Hill because, unlike AF and others, its susceptibility to blackspot is no worse than average.

I am still trying to narrow down the choices to just one.... LOL, wish me luck! If I replace Angel Face, I will move her to another spot in the garden around smaller plants e.g. Daylilies where she won't be dwarfed by taller roses. I'm also considering keeping her in this spot for one more season, and giving her more attention. I have given our roses only 1 feeding this year; the year our roses looked THE BEST EVER was the year I scattered alfalfa pellets around them and watered them in. WOW, even Peace woke up. Is it possible that a better feeding schedule including alfalfa would produce a bigger Angel Face, or will she only produce more canes of the same height?
RE: Replacement for Angel Face?

I fertilize my roses fairly regularly, including Angel Face. Here, with no disease pressure, at only one year old, she is quite vigorous, and blooms regularly. And to my surprise, she can really take our dry heat. Already, her ruffly blooms are among my favorite. So, to answer your question, I think fertilizing a few times a season will make a real difference in her size, and she'll definitely produce taller canes. Do you get any blackspot? If not, this rose could really come into its own for you. Diane

I love Angel Face, havent found another quite like it. Dont mind spraying for blackspot - it took our Texas heat quite well, tho not many blooms. Another I like in that color range is Sweet Intoxication - healthy bush, pretty blooms. Like it alot.

How about the grandaflora Fragrant Plum?

I so miss my angel face (gopher food). Mine had started growing like gangbusters. Alas. I'd definitely recommend Blueberry Hill if a double is ok. It is in bloom all year round here (maybe 2 winter months off), covered with blooms, and as a 5 year old rose pruned about 3x a year, it's still about 5' x 4'. Quite lovely. Color pretty much same as angel face. Except for keeping it pruned to a reasonable size, pretty much no maintenance. Does better with some fertilizer but will bloom it's head off without. Not a hint of any sort of disease issue.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll keep them handy, but I've decided to give AF another year with more TLC, alfalfa, etc. I even bought another one to plant in a different spot closer to the patio where she can be enjoyed close up; maybe she just wants to be closer to us, LOL.

Seems the perfect solution to your Angel Face replacement growing around four feet in height would be a three foot standard of Angel Face. Kim
RE: Replacement for Angel Face?

Just a suggestion...I've grown Angel Face roses for over 20 years in southern Nevada and northern California. They love lots of morning sun and don't like to go to bed wet! Water early in the morning if possible. Most importantly I would suggest carefully digging up your plant, re-digging the hole and fill it with fresh peat moss/potting soil. (what if a neighbor cat or your dog is doing their business too close to the plant?) Make sure you cut away all bad leaves and dying buds as soon as you see them and put them in the trash as far away from the plant as possible. I got so many blooms from roses in so. NV each month you would have to seen it to believe me. Those were the best as they had all day sun. My CA roses didn't get the early morning sun and it was a struggle to get them to all grow evenly and get 10% of the buds I got with my roses in so. NV. You don't want to put it in a smaller pot if you want it to catch up to your others. I also douse my plants with nitrogen and my roses love miracle grow. My iris's are chest high and I over watered them too. Good luck!

I have Neptune, Barbra Streisand, Stainless Steel, WWII Memorial, Blue Girl, Blue Moon, Moonlight Magic, Purple Passion, Charles de Gaulle and Paradise Found. I would add Mamy Blue but it appears mine, from Hortico, is mislabeled. Did I mention I like the mauves? You may want to look at Babs. Mine grows like a grandiflora (I disbud), nice color and scent.

I got Singing' the Blues as a replacement for an Angel Face that would not stop suckering. Color is similar but petals are not ruffly and the fragrance is not as strong. This year I planted a new Angel Face because I missed it. It really takes the heat. If I get another one I'm going to buy it on fortuniana. My Fragrant Plum just didn't repeat often enough and I took it out. I've had Blueberry Hill and the blooms didn't hold up in the heat. Pretty though and blooms a lot. Mary

Poseidon. It is also known as Novalis. It is part of the Kordes Fairy Tale series. It is hardy and has the best rating for BS that Kordes lists for his roses. Also very high mildew resistance. http://palatineroses.com/rose/poseidon http://www.kordes-rosen.com/gartenrose-novalis

Good idea giving it another year. Also though, sometimes roses just don't grow well in a particular spot. I have a spot along my fence line where I have tried to grow Julia Child, didn't grow a lick for 2 years, moved it to another spot and it is now growing like crazy. Replaced the dirt there and tried peace. Same thing happened, it shrunk more then it grew. Moved it to the bed and it is now shooting up like crazy. Don't know what the deal was, lots of sun, had roses growing great along the fence to the right and left, just not right there. If you decide to change: Depending on how dark you want-- Love Song--Great color lots of blooms light mauve. Twilight Zone & Ebb Tide-both much darker, but lots of pretty blooms. Stainless steel grows great for me, but is much lighter.

I second the suggestion of Fragrant Plum. It's very vigorous for me in inland SoCal, doesn't mind my neglect, repeats well and smells wonderful. The one problem might be keeping it down to 4 feet!
