Yes! (enabling here) Although I'm not a huge fan of old Abe myself, I'd go for all three!

HAHA! Seil why not a fan of ML?

 o
RE: Ok which ones :)

It turns a goofy purple color in the sun....some people like that, though.

I've heard that ML is a slow starter & prone to blackspot, but Firefighter has better form, better vigor, and more prolific blooms for a strongly-scented red.

I'm a nerd collected a bunch of info in a spreadsheet last year when I was trying to decide on a Red HT. I ended up getting Veterans' Honor, but I had different criteria than you, most likely. It's not scented nearly as heavily as ML or Firefighter.

I've seen Moonstone and it is just GORGEOUS.

Moonstone and Firefighter are $20 each, I think the greenhouse received them as bare root then potted them so they are is 1-2 maybe 3 gal pots. Firefighter is at Kmart potted and they a few feet tall and has blooms :)

hello

I meant Mr Lincoln is a Kmart....

ML was really crappy for me here. Not vigorous, spotty, balled blooms, I was thankful when it died over winter and put us both out of its misery.

thanks flaurabunda your spreadsheets make it easier for someone to make a decision :)

Firefighter, Firefighter, or Firefighter ;-) As we would say in Australia, it's the EverReady Bunny of fragrance. Don't know if the ad slogan is used in the US, but it would translate as non-stop, never-fail, battery powered perfume. Cuts wonderfully well for the vase, too.

This post makes me feel better... I had to make a decision on which red rose should I buy last year. I ended up buying firefighter. Even though I have not seen bloom yet. I feel much relieved...

But I think I will get a dark red (crimson?) fragrant hybrid-tea rose sometime...
Just have not done research and need some suggestion.

Anyone know a very dark-red and fragrant, and decease resistant, and vigorous hybrid tea rose???

(Sorry it is a lot of criteria).

Again, Firefighter for all qualities you require. It's a lot darker than the Helpmefind pix would suggest. I believe that the so-called "black" reds like Black Magic, Black Baccara, or Black Beauty have none to slight fragrance.

You might consider getting one of the black reds that cuts really well , and mix the cut flowers in with Firefighter. I do that with my Black Baccara. Looks pretty good, and the Baccara is instantly fragrant by association;-)

Blackness: many black roses will not be nearly so black in the heat, when your Zone9 summer rolls around. Stilkl, what's to hate about deep red?

I love the idea of a 'decease resistant" rose :-)))))) In my care, they have to be. I've caused a lot of rose deceasing in my time.

My mom really loved Moonstone. To her, perfect in every way. one bloom in a vase or a dozen. She wasn't a big "red" fan. They were OK but the soft tones and perfect foliage of Moonstone were overwhelming.

Thanks!!!

Haha ! I would love to have a decease resistant rose too :-))

RE: Ok which ones :)

After all this reading about Firefighter, I must get one. For a "dark red", I can tell you from Mr Lincoln, Crimson Glory, Chrysler Imperial, and Oklahoma - Oklahoma by far is the darkest red (with black tones) of this set. I haven't had it long enough to speak to its disease resistence and vigor, but it is wonderfully fragrant. I wasn't impressed with it year one, but year two I'm falling in love.

I sure like Alec's Red. Dont hear it mentioned much, but it has a strong fragrance and has been an excellent rose for me. Crimson Glory is one of my favorites. I loved the first bloom I got on Legends - its huge, but no fragrance, but is just beautiful. Hope the bush does well - its new for me this year.

Thanks everyone! I can't make a decision haha I will just tell him what I want and let him pick :-D

I live in Illinois, so I grow MR Lincoln. It is not the most vigorous rose in the garden, but it is one of the best smelling roses! Here the color stays a dark red

RE: Ok which ones :)

Epis, in CA, where powdery mildew can be a problem, it's the fragrant dark reds which are often most troubled by that disease.

I LIKE red roses, tho, so I grow dark red China Roses, which don't have the problems I see with fragrant red Modern HTs, or Hybrid Perpetuals.

I quit fighting Mother Nature decades ago, and we're both happier as a result.
