There Can Be Only One!

Hello Folks! I have moved to Charlotte from Connecticut where I had a rose garden of 40+ bushes. I have downsized considerably and now I am allowing myself one (1) rose bush for the front yard. And I would like you to help me choose. My perfect rose bush has to be Big, Showy (audacious even) Very Fragrant and Prolific. I like intense colors so if it is pink it must be really bright pink. Deep Reds and Yellows and Bi-colors are are also good. Tea, English Romantica,Floribunda, all are fine as long as it fits the criteria above. For those of you who remember me from my days on this forum you will recall I have no willpower, which is why I am asking for your help. Thanks all!

Yves Piaget is very fragrant, colorful, with large dark pink blooms. Mine is relatively new to the garden, but showed signs of good repeat bloom last summer.

Perfume Delight is a beautiful, productive Hybrid Tea with dark pink blooms. It's a happy bloomer.

Bishop's Castle is a lovely Austin with good repeat bloom, wonderfully fragrant pink blooms.

If you will not be spraying fungicide in Charlotte, choices are very limited, and there may not be a very fragrant rose that fits the bill. I'd suggest 'Earth Song," which becomes a 6 x 6 shrub if pruned lightly, a tremendous bloomer, bright pink, slightly fragrant. 'Country Dancer' ould work as well.

There are probably some bright-colored old tea roses that are no-spray roses in the Carolina Piedmont, but you need local advice for them.

If you want to put up an 8' x 8' support, 'Rosarium Uetersen' is a colossal traffic-stopper in bright red/coral/salmon, and it is fragrant. It is pretty resistant and may (or may not) be clean enough without spray.

Belinda's Dream.

If you want scent also - the McCartney Rose, or Alec's Red.

The McCartney Rose might be the best hope among very fragrant, bright-colored roses. Alec's Red was not resistant here.

Scentimental rose is pretty bold and smells nice. It also has a nice bloom form although it isn't good for cutting because the petals drop fast. Young Lycidas is nice too. Belinda's Dream is a fantastic rose, but I'm not sure the color would be to your taste.

I could spray one (1) rose. I had 2 Scentimentals back in CT and loved them but yes not good for cutting. I just realized I literally live across the road from a rose nursery called Witherspoon. Anyone heard of them? I am resisting the urge to go in and browse as I have NO willpower! /Abi

What about the big bold Tea, 'Mrs. B. R. Cant'? She's memorable!

RE: There Can Be Only One! (each!)

Gary and I were torn between 2 plants. Abraham Darby is my favorite but he fell in love with double delight. So, we now have 2 plants. One each. Now, I have several cats, could I get one each for them also? BTW, Witherspoon has beautiful healthy specimens, and a great selection! /Abi

I am going through all the roses I have grown in my mind that might fit your specifications. It would be so hard to pick only one.

Brass Band for me produces a lot of dark to light apricot blend flowers. Quite big and showy with lots of flowers. Not a lot of scent but some.

Double Delight to me has the perfect fragrance and is very striking. Good cut flower and can produce a good number of flowers if pruned right.

I re-read your last post and see you picked DD. Good choice.
