Shrub Rose Question

My Mother-in-law had an amazing shrub rose in her garden that only bloomed once a year but when it did, it was a show stopper. I think it was called Golden Showers. This was more than 50 years ago. Are there still shrub roses? Have they been improved so that you can have a shrub rose that blooms more than once a year? Or are there other roses that reach a good size and can stand alone in the garden? I don't want a climber but would like a large size plant.

Yes, Yes, and Yes, lots. Golden Showers itself is still around and not too hard to find. But there are lots of gorgeous shrub roses out there. Pick up a catalog of most any rose grower, or visit www.roguevalleyroses.com or www.heirloomroses.com. You can visit my blog below for pictures and descriptions of a few shrubs as well. Just hit the "my roses" tab.

Thanks for the link and the info. I'll see what's available for this area.

RE: Shrub Rose Question

Many roses can be grown either as short climbers with support or large shrubs with pruning. Such roses might be officially classed as either shrubs or climbers. Repeat bloom is common. The trick will be finding some that are resistant to diseases in your area, unless you are willing to spray fungicide. People will make suggestions if you suggest a couple of colors. How big do you want the plant to be?

Golden Showers, tho, is a climber to 14 ft. or so. So, as a SHRUB, it's going to be big.

Here it is, in an old cemetery:

This was taken in the Spring. When we saw it again in October, it had been pruned RUTHLESSLY. I'd not be surprised if it is soon gone.

A favourite shrub of many in Coastal BC is 'Fantin Latour' (Centifolia) if you don't mind a once blooming shrub. Try Pickering Nurseries in Ontario. You can mail order from them. It can be spectacular when in bloom. As far as I know it seems to be quite healthy in this region. JMO....
A bonus is the lovely fragrance.
