Rogue Valley Roses ... a very very good company to deal with ... is the sole source for Paul's roses.

Enablers! I had convinced myself that I was satisfied with my collection and wouldn't make any more purchases for a few years. But since I have a few Paul Barden roses and they are doing very well I just had to go look and see what else was out there... and now I'm itching to get just six more... six isn't that many, right? Tee hee...

I'm waiting right now for my first glimpses of 'Marianne', 'Allegra', and 'Gallicandy'. And I've ordered several more this year.

Rogue Valley Roses as mentioned previously. I'm waiting for Treasure Trail to come back into stock. Not only is the color dazzling but it is noted for its reblooming qualities which is rare for a moss rose, or so I figure. Now this I must have! And another one that I must have is Siren.

 o
RE: Siren

Correction: The full name is Siren's Keep.

RE: Paul Barden Breeding Roses

Last year I bought both Treasure Trail and Unconditional Love, which is also a Paul Bordon reblooming moss, though it is listed as a miniature. I actually found it both a more vigourous grower and a better bloomer than Treasure Trail, and Treasure Trail's blooms are not much bigger than Unconditonal Love's, and there were far fewer of them. Now that they are in their second year, maybe Treasure Trail will catch up.

I know when I search for Paul Barden's roses on HMF I drool...there's so many more that I would love that aren't commercially available. Maybe one day...

@Tammy: out of curiosity, which of the un-named roses on HMF strike your fancy most?

I had this cream colored rose on my favorites list, like Tammy:

These are my other favorites:
(not that I was asked, but I was just looking thru them a couple nights ago and found several I thought were so pretty!)

RE: Paul Barden Breeding Roses

Paul; I didn't know until the posts above that there were so many of your unreleased roses pictured on helpmefind. After looking through them, I'm torn about which one I like best of the following two:

27-07-16 http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.62300.0
98-06-03 http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.58156.0

I also liked that deeper colored self of Incantation, but can't find it again.

 o
RE: Paul Barden Breeding Roses

@professorroush: 27-07-16 was discarded (yes, thrown out: dead and gone) in 2011 for utter lack of vigor. In in four years of growth it had never exceeded 12" in height. Classic case of great flower on a worthless plant!
98-06-03 is still a contender, and in fact is looking very promising.

Thanks for asking. I will comment on the other seedlings later today.

RE: Paul Barden Breeding Roses

27-07-16 is gone.... :( that bloom was to die for!!!! Now I gotta stop looking at it...

Going down your list from top to bottom: 25-07-07 is now an approved variety and is in the process of being propagated for commercial release. Perhaps 2013. Next on your list is 98-06-03, which is under serious consideration at this time. At least two years out, though. Same for 125-06-03. Fourth down on your list is another photo of 98-06-03, already mentioned. At position #5 is 19-06-03, which failed in testing and has been discarded: winter hardiness issues + too much disease. Finally, 76-03-01, also discarded for poor performance in the garden: severe dieback in the winter, lack of vigor.

"I also liked that deeper colored self of Incantation, but can't find it again."

You mean 84-07-03, I believe. Beautiful blooms, shapely plant, but utterly lacking in vigor. Most unfortunate :-(

have you done anything more with this?

 o
Jessica's list

@Jessica: in order of your list from top to bottom...

You mentioned 27-07-16 as well, which failed in testing and was discarded: it had ZERO vigor and wouldn't grow more than a foot tall. Sad.
Next at #2 is 85-05-01, a bracteata hybrid. A very shapely bush of no more than 3 feet tall (and wide) with gorgeous champagne-blushed blooms and unbelievably rich scent reminiscent of Apricots. Unfortunately it has two fatal flaws: nearly impossible to propagate, and the petal texture is far too thin. It would turn to mush in prolonged periods of wetness. Sad also.
Your #3 is 29-04-02, also discarded from testing. It too had a fatal flaw: it went into semi-dormancy in late July every year, dropping most of its foliage. No idea why, some genetic defect.
#4 is 31-06-03, which, although a very shapely plant, hardy and quite pretty in most every way, suffered too much from disease. Also ruled out as a contender.
#5, seedling 52-04-03 is a climber bred from 'Marechal Niel' and as such is very much like that rose. I have a couple of people testing it for performance, but I have no doubt this will be suitable only for relatively winterless climates.
#6 is 65-08-11, a cross of 'Abraham Darby' and 'Arthur Bell'. It is too new to offer much information about. I need to watch it another year or two before I will know much about its performance. Lets just say that I'm not all that hopeful, but who knows.
#7, seedling #77-07-03 is one of my more recent kordesii hybrids. It doesn't bloom as much as I'd like, and it turns out to be somewhat susceptible to Blackspot, so I'm not very hopeful. It does have two siblings that are both red and both are much healthier plants. I am placing my bets on the other two.
Finally, there is 120-06-02, bred from "Grandma's Hat' and a proprietary bracteata seedling I use in breeding every year. Although this is a sturdy seedling, it doesn't build much wood from year to year, and tends to be very upright and stark-of-foliage (read: sparse) making it look a bit "weedy", a trait I cannot abide.

Thanks for asking, I hope that shed some light on the current state of things.

Paul

de Rescht seedling

@Jessica, who asked:
"Paul, I was looking around on your website and I found this

http://paulbardenroses.com/damasks/rescht.trad.html

have you done anything more with this?"

Yes, I have, in fact! I dug it up and tossed it on the "burn pile"! It turned out to be a poor grower that had bad architecture (It wanted to grow sideways a lot) and the blooms were often deformed. It also Blackspotted like mad. Feh.

I have Paul's mini moss, Unconditional Love, and would highly recommend it! Great little healthy plant, good repeat bloom and winter hardy to boot!

 o
RE: Paul Barden Breeding Roses

One thing this tells us is that breeding roses is one of those occupations in which you must kiss many toads to meet the Handsome Prince.

That's one really big reason why we don't propagate newer roses which are still in patent. Their creator doesn't make a princely sum off the plants that are sold, but they get SOMETHING. It's important not to cheat on that.

Jeri

Paul, I have had to put 'Dragon's Blood' behind a fence, where Katie can't get it. She eats the blooms as soon as they start to open. They must be delicious.
