I keep bumping into this rose for sale. Seems like I have read really good reports on her. I'm in a place where I think I'm about at my rose limit. But, is she a must have?

She sure is for me, harmony, I just love this rose, but here she gets much larger than advertised.

I takes about a yr or two to get a good bush, then look out. Average about 80 to 100 blooms per bloom cycle. Fantastic rose.

Oh geez. So - how much space would I need to give her? I have one spot in partial shade that could handle a 5' diameter rose w/no height limit. Could that work, or would it be a shame not to have her in full sun?

Not a particularly good rose here; sometimes a whole flush will ball after a cool rain. In this climate, BD is also highly susceptible to some spot disease (cercospora?) that makes the foliage look ratty. Farther north, in zone 5, BD is not winter hardy. Generally, the closer your climate is to that of central Texas, the better she will be.

My neighbor is thinking of spading her Belinda. I think she complained about it being slow to recover from winter weather (freezes, etc.) and the blooms often not wanting to open. My neighbor has never been able to get it to grow into a decent sized shrub, and she's had it 3-4 years now. However, Kansas might be colder than whatever part of California you are in, so maybe you wouldn't have those problems there. There certainly are other folks who rave about her. Myself, I can take her or leave her. Kate

| Thrives with heat and dry air. Here the spring flush is never the best. It gets better as the season progresses. I love BD. Growth habit is wider than tall.

Hoovb, How tall and wide is your Belinda's Dream? I bought an own root this spring and it is growing like a weed. I plan on putting it in a large pot. I have 20 gal, 25 gal and 30 gal pots to choose from. What do you think my best choice would be? Lee

the biggest one you have, if you can't put her in the ground. She CAN get ten feet tall, or be maintained 6 foot or so.

I'm still not quite sure what steroids hoovb gives her plants. I had Belinda's Dream in Columbus. It did pretty well and has a moderately strong spice fragrance. The blooms did balls when really wet, but it wasn't widespread so it wasn't that annoying. A very pretty HT nonetheless, but I left it in Columbus and didn't take it with me.

Mine is 6' tall, 8' wide, but I try to keep it to 5' or less, just looks better. Too tall and the heavy big flowers pull the canes down.

This is year one. 7 bushes along the front of my grooming shop. No spray, no water, nothing but deadheading.
All own root. paid .50 to 1.50 for each bush.....figured if they didnt make it no big deal. That bottom photo is year two, mid july.... . They were well above the AC unit and we had to be careful cause they used to block it last year. they were almost to the middle of the window and that window is on a raised portion of the building. This year we cut them back to 12 inches to try to keep them under the 8 foot tall they got last year by September They are already 5-6 foot tall and just as thick as ever. I probably could thin it out to 3 bushes and be fine......but I really never thought they would end up this nice! I fertilized once last year.....some balling if we hit a really bad wet spell but no BS or anything else. OH and the fragrance wafts over the yard to the neighbors on both sides....so nice! |
