Picking roses, they are wet

I want to take a birthday rose bouquet to a friend today. Meant to get it picked last night but forgot, and it rained in the night. If I pick the just opening buds and give them a gentle shake upside down to get the water out, will they continue to open up nicely in a bouquet? Or should I try for the more closed up buds? Anyone have experience with picking wet roses?

I've often picked them after a rain. Gently shake out as much water as you can and they should be fine. Cut them at the stages you usually would, even partially open. The big thing is to be gentle and shake out as much water as possible. Keeping them in your house a few hours after being put in the vase will help a lot of the water to evaporate before giving them as a gift. I think you'll be pleased to see how much more fragrant they can seem with the extra moisture from the evaporation.

If they're open or partially so, you can also lean them against something, flower end down, on a folded towel for the water to drain out of them while you prepare the vase or re cut other stems. What you'd like to do will work just fine. Go for it! Have fun! Kim

Don't shake them. Carefully dab them with a dry paper towel. If they are partially open you can tease the water out with Q-tips. It is also possible to cut away the damaged parts of the petals.

Thank you. I'll get as much water out as I can and hopefully being inside for a while will allow enough evaporation from the blooms.
