I really don't remember leaving my Felcos outside, but who knows. The blades and spring are both rusted. Is there any way to clean the rust off or will I have to just replace parts at this point?

don't fret - take the whole things apart and give them a really good soak in oil (I use standard 3in1 bicycle oil) then a good rub with steel wool. I once threw mine into the incinerator by mistake and melted all the red covering - I sent them back to the company and had them redipped. You may find that your local hardware store will also do this for you and sharpen the blades while they are about it. felcos should last a lifetime (they cost enough) so do persevere - rust is only a surface thing - there will be no significant damage to the blades or the bypass mechanism.

Can you get bicycle oil at places like Walmart?
|
yeah, but really, any lubrication will do - even sunflower oil if that is what's around. The steel wool is the stuff which gets them back to shiny health (and you can use any scratchy pan-scourer, wet and dry sandpaper or even emery cloth. The main thing is not to worry - Felco's are really tough - it takes more than a season or two lying under a bush to do any damage (can you guess mine have also been through that ordeal).

Sewing machine oil is great and I got some at Walmart. As a fallback, you can use three-in-one oil, but I think it's a bit heavy. I took a pair of pruners I had left under a rose bush for a year down to the hardware store so that one of the guys could loosen the screw and used some rust remover before soaking them in oil. If you start out with good tools, often then can be saved ... I have tested that theory ! Smiles,

That's the great thing about Felco: you can take it apart, clean it but if you don't want to mess around, you can buy new parts.

glad to hear they will redip them, as one of the hand grips came off, although after twelve of so years of active use, they are still pretty good! second or third set of blades. although HOW can I be without them for that long!!!! How long did it take?
