In the past 20 years, I've probably had to prune my New Dawn to within an inch of ground level in the Spring at least 4 times to remove winter-damaged wood. No problem - except fewer blooms for the ensuing year.

It will be fine--eventually. Just lock up the pruners from now on. :)

Yes. It's much easier to keep the pruners locked in a cabinet than a spouse.

oh absolutely - I hacked mine back to nothing last year - I was planning on saying bye-bye but gave up on the gnarly root as it was right next to the wall. Blow me, it came roaring back from a minuscule smidgeon of remaining plant....and this is not even the first time - not long after I had it, sweetheart (although I was not calling him that at the time....rhymes with sucker) drove the pergola posts right down into the centre of the crown. I swear it is unkillable.

Don't worry...I know the feeling. My mother is the worst disease/pest to my roses whether it be cutting all the blooms off(before they bloom), crushing an entire rose, or cutting my long Spirit of Freedom canes down to 6 inches...it's always people that are the worst.

Luckily roses are great survivors and come back. Depending on how old your New Dawn is, you should get some nice thick basal canes to replace the ones that were cut out as long as it was above the graft. No worries, just some patience, and make sure to keep a gun away from yourself for a while.

Just think of it as a renewal. It will grow back!

You can have mine! I call it "the weed rose" since it behaves like an invasive weed. Competitor of Dr Huey.

He might have done you a favor!!HA!! I don`t believe you can kill this rose, but missing her spring bloom is sad. Mine is a monster, and I keep hacking on it! I`m sure he was trying to help.....Good luck with your New Dawn. Lesley

Well, now that many have given you great news that your rose will likely come back, let me suggest you not tell your husband that! Let him feel bad, perhaps he will buy you some new roses! :)
I remember one spring I got 12 seedling trees from Arbor Day foundation. It said to plant them in shade for the first couple years, so I planted them on the edge of our woods. Took a good day, as we have heavy clay soil. I tended to them, and watered them, and later that summer, my husband mowed them all down!

You might want to keep lawn mowers and weed-whippers away from him too. My husband mowed over one of my limelight hydrangeas, weed-whipped my sedum and let me think for days that it was some animal (guess it was), pulled my cosmo seedlings up (thinking they were weeds), and I don't know what all else might be missing from my gardens.

Men can be trained. However, it takes patience. And a whip.
