First time ever, rabbits chewed bark off of 2 of my roses, at the bottom. Will they survive?

Lots of wabbit damage here also, including bark stripping. We shall see. I cut off some of the most badly damaged canes.

Is it advisable to paint over the bare spots with the white stuff that is used on fruit trees?

Any spot where the outer bark has been removed all the way around the cane will die so take it off below the injury. Make clean cuts on anything chewed up. If you want you can use something to seal the open ends so cane borers won't go in, water proof glue or even nail polish. I'm not sure about painting the places where bark has been striped. They don't even recommend that for trees any more. They say it's better to let the wound heal naturally and callus over. If you can cage or fence them off to keep the rabbits out I'd do that too until later in the spring when there's more food and the rabbits won't be a threat. I use halved firring strips and chicken wire to fence my beds to keep out rabbits.

Rabbits chewed most of our young own root roses to the ground the winter before last. They all came back.

I started putting wire fencing around them during the winter time and they have been leaving them alone.

Had to laugh though when the snow got deep this winter and I forgot to remove the snow around the roses and I looked out one day and rabbits were walking on top of the snow which was higher than my wire fencing and rabbits were munching... So had to keep the snow cleared away after that...lol

I just took this pic a few minutes ago...
