Gave it a couple cups of alfalfa pellets after cutting it down to the budhead. Think I saw two tiny little leaf buds coming at budhead, but, not positive yet. Gosh I hope so. I have bare-knuckled roses before, and wirebrushed any crud off them, but they were not as precious to me as Mom's old Peace. Thanks for all advice. I know the alfalfa almost always works, but a little afraid on that one. Thank you for all your advice.

Charley, is it own root or grafted?

Think it may have gone own-root, but not sure as I did not pull away any of the wet valley soil, about 2 yr. ago, when I brought it home. It was in bad shape but bloomed for me well then. My soil is pretty good sandy and I use alfalfa every year. The little red ( I hope) are coming from what looks like the budhead. I am not going to dig around in it yet to disturb.

Pictures? Always nice to have when asking a question, especially a close-up of the area with a problem.
