I got a beautiful, healthy "Smiley Face" rose plant from a good nursery about 1 week ago. Planted it, watered it, and it's leaves are turning brown as if it's been hot/dry (neither of which is has been)
I realized I planted it in the same spot where the previous owner had planted a hydrangea (it was young and didn't make it through last year's drought) and now I'm wondering if they treated the soil in that area to change the pH for the hydrangeas. Would acidic soil cause this problem? How can I correct it? Is it going to stress the rose more to dig it up and work something into the soil, or can I put it on the surface and let it leach down? |

| Roses seem to prefer a slightly acid soil, around pH 6.5. At much lower pH, aluminum and other metals become more soluble and these can cause a toxic reaction in a rose. The cardinal rule of dealing with soil pH is to take no action to change it until you have actually measured it. |

| A bigger problem may be that your rose was not getting the minimum of 6 hours of sunlight it needs. Often when gardeners talk about their hydrangea, they mean the mopheads or macrophylla hydrangeas which are usually grown in partial shade--not a good spot for a sun-loving rose. Of course if the hydrangea was a paniculata (sun-lover), there is no problem planting a rose in the same spot. Too much water could cause some of the leaf problems you are discussing. On the other hand, most roses have to be growing in the ground for about a month before they start to put out strong new growth. Can you show some pictures? Might make it easier for posters to diagnose the problem. Kate |

| Most roses like a little acidity. So unless they really poured the acid on that shouldn't be a problem. But I have to agree with Kate, the amount of sun hydrangeas need is far less than what a rose would need to thrive. |
