Hot Princess and Chicago Peace. I received Hot Princess as an own root from RU this spring and wonder what to expect (ht/width/vigor etc). As for Chicago Peace I've just seen a few blooms at a nursery but heard it wasn't a good rose overall (disease?). Any information about these two would be welcome....Maryl

| I LOVE LOVE LOVE Chicago Peace and want more people to grow it :) I bought a grafted 5 gallon plant from my local nursery 2 years ago and it has done really well. It's very vigorous, very hardy (no damage from the last 2 winters), quite disease resistant and smells beautiful. It also stands up to my hot and humid summers well (it's in full sun all day) and the petals are thick enough that it withstands high winds and rain as well. It is gorgeous as a cut flower. Its coloring is also quite variable depending on climate conditions, sometimes the same rose can look completely different depending on when in the season you see it. Honestly, it is the most PERFECT rose in my garden. Here are pix to enable you -
In the pic below, it has a striking resembance to its parent.

Also, I don't know how you feel about own-root vs grafted but here in the Midwest I have completely given up on own-root HTs. I buy Austins, OGRs, Bucks and Rugosas own-root but I ony go for grafted HTs now, and buy the largest size I can afford... I haven't grown Chi Peace one-root so all my above comments are for grafted plants.

Hot Princess is a great HT. Mine is on Manetti, but a friend has it own root, and both are extremely robust. It is still used as a florist rose. I think you'll like it (the other bloom is Leana)...

Duh...

My Hot Princess can get to 7' tall and 3' wide. Must be treated regularly for blackspot (as do all HTs here). Some fragrance.

| I love Chicago Peace and have grown it for years. Mine has 12 blooms just like this one pictured right now. It's big and fluffy without a well defined center, but absolutely beautiful. I haven't had any difficulties with disease or growing it here in NC.

Thank you all for your wonderful pictures. Lovemysheltie: I agree with you about grafted roses being superior as a rule on HTs etc. Dr. Huey is the acceptable rootstock for my area because of our alkaline soil. Multiflora rootstock suffers, and Fortuniana is not for me. But some HT's,if vigorous enough, can do alright own root. Hot Princess is not available grafted on Dr. Huey, so I have no choice. Time will tell......And Diane, looking at your picture of it I really really hope it does well. Luscious. Have you found it to be winter tender? Where did you find yours on Manetti?......MsHermer: appreciate your contribution. Between your picture and LMS, I think Chicago Peace looks just wonderful. Thanks for telling me your experience with it......Maryl

Maryl, no, HP is not winter tender at all. I bought mine from Carlton Roses, which is now out of business, but they sold a lot of HTs that were florist varieties, grafted on Manetti.

CP is a great rose in my garden on Dr Huey. I don't prune it hard. Just keep the bush shaped up. It rewards me with tons of beautiful blooms. Every bloom cycle I can always get a perfect exhibition bloom. Stem, foliage and bloom. It will probably always be in my garden along with Peace.

thanks Diane for the further information. I remember Carlton's as well as others who aren't around now (Young Bros.roses, Arena, all the miniature rose nurseries etc.). A real shame that we have arrived at this point in time where so few choices exist. Glad to know that Hot Princess is not winter tender. So many florist roses can be. Again, gorgeous picture...Ken, your experience is always welcome. You know about hot climates for one from your days in Florida. Thanks for the input....Maryl

I have an old Chicago Peace rose. Very healthy, and the blooms are the size of small cabbages. I don't know who told you it wasn't a good rose, but honestly it's one of the best of my Hybrid teas.

What roses would complement the colors of CP? It's been a long time since I've had it and my recently purchased one hasn't yet bloomed. I hope it resembles the above pictures (as it might look okay next to Proud Land) but my former one seemed to have more coral and peach tones. Would really appreciate your suggestions as I'm way behind in my rose planting and I waste too much time obsessing over color coordination.

Klynn: The bed that this rose may go in has Verbena Sissinghurst around it. Hot Princess is a match to the pink of that particular Verbena (my favorite Verbena). I think that CP may also coordinate well with it....If anyone is still tuned in to this thread could you tell me how tall/wide Chicago Peace gets for you. I missed that information somewhere....Maryl
