As long as the mulch is dry, and even if it's damp, nothing bad should happen to it. Mulch is sold in plastic bags and kept outside in rain or in storage sheds anyway.

I would leave the top open for a day or so to be sure that it's dry before sealing it up for long term storage.

Yeah! I agree with susan 4952. Why would you want to remove mulch? It decomposes and thus feeds the soil, which feed the roses. If you are concerned about lack of nitrogen, give the roses an extra dose. If you put too much down, say 10 inches or more, then yes, remove some. But, mulch will suppress weed growth. Weeds rob roses of nutrients and look ugly. I would definitely leave it. that's my 2 cents. Barbara

Not a problem, punch a few small holes in the bag so oxygen can get in so the mulch will not go anerobic, which is a scientific term that for gardening purposes that means "really stinky".

Are fungi aerobic or anaerobic? Mike? KArl?

I'm pretty sure Hrose is talking about a large volume of mulch placed on the roses as winter protection that now needs to be taken down some for the season. Not about stripping all the mulch off the bed.

yeah i put soil(cow manure) a whole bag of it right on top of of each rose then mulch on top of that and all the roses survived the winter (-20/-30 thats freezing COLD!) once i removed some of the mulch (beginning of spring) and soil the branches or stems of the rose (HTs) were nice n GREEN and now i removed some of the mulch and soil so water can get to the roots

I don't suppose you have some corner of the yard where you could let it all compost down, do you? Or add it to an existing compost heap (or use the mulch to start one)? Or use it as a mulch elsewhere, letting it do its useful work under trees and shrubs? The idea of storing mulch in bags strikes me as odd. Congratulations on getting your roses through the winter successfully! Melissa |

mulch also attracts bugs like spider mites can anyone confirm this dryness and insecticides encourage spider mites. they dislike moist conditions, and insecticides kill off their predators.
