Richard Owen Nursery and Brownell roses

I received an add for an outfit called Richard Owens Nursery/Exciting Gardens. It is not well liked at Dave's Garden is not the sort of place I would order from. It seems to be an outlet for nursery trade overstocks.

It is offering some Brownell roses which seem to be otherw ise virtually unavailable.

Rhode Island Red
and ten "sub-zero" HTs. I understand they are not really hardy past zone 5, but I might be able to grow them. I imagine they are grafted onto Dr. H.

They offer Maria Stern, Helen Hayes, Victory (the same rose Vintage calls V for Victory), Curly Pink,Charlotte Brownell (improved Peace for colder climates), Arctic Flame, Queen O. the Lakes, Lily Pons, Senior Prom, Dr. Brownell.

Prices are quite low, $5.99 for the sub-zeros, and $6.99 for RIR.

Is it worth taking a chance on this outfit? I was particularly interested in Arctic Flame and Rhode Is. Red.

Virused Brownells are only for the hard core. And only for the hard core that are used to disappointment and can handle it. Unfortunately, most of them also seem to require rootstock.

One of the odd bits of information floating around my brain is remembering reading in some contemporary book that V for Victory tended to start off as a good rose, but then deteriorated badly. It sounded remarkably like the performance descriptions of virused Austins. We haven't managed to get the good early years.

Own-root, Rhode Island Red is available from a number of vendors under its found name of Fields of the Wood. I think dna testing has shown the two to be identical.

You know, if you're willing to spend the money and take the chance go for it. But go in knowing that they could be poor quality or mislabeled roses. I sometimes buy roses like this but I don't expect them to be great. Sometimes I get surprised by how nice they are and other times not so much. It's a gamble and only you can know if you want to chance it.

Fields of the Wood is, as you say, harborrose, available from three reputable vendors.

Is it certain that all the Brownell HTs are virused? What a shame, and, really, not much excuse for that negligence.

I just planted my new 'Fields of the Wood' yesterday. It was about 18" tall and ordered from Rogue Valley. It was a nice looking plant.
