| OK so here is the story about this rose. I bought it for my grandma for mother's day back in 2006. It was called a "Pink Nancy" rose or something to that effect. Anyway, it bloomed one time, these big pretty pinkish-lavender blooms. Then it never bloomed again!!! It was still alive, it just never bloomed. In 2011, someone gave me an angel trumpet and I wanted to put it where I had planted this rose. The rose looked dead at this point. So I dug it up. When I dug it up, it had brand new healthy shoots coming up so I thought, maybe all this time it had been buried too deep! So I moved it. Lo and behold, it bloomed again in 2012! One single bloom. Nothing since 2012. So, it is coming back this year. Except I have noticed something.... the right side of the rose has tiny leaves, and the left side of the rose has huge leaves. Um, is this normal!?!? Take a look at the pics. Whole rose bush Left side of the rose, the leaves are in sets of 3 and are large! Right side of the rose... the leaves are in clusters and are tiny! |

| If this was my rose, here is what I would do: 1) Dig down on the left hand side of the rose until you get to where that cane is coming out of the main trunk of the rose (may be several inches). Cut it off flush with the main trunk (I think that cane is rootstock - it will eventually take over and kill the rest of the rose if you leave it). Do not cut it higher, that will just make it grow more. Then put the dirt back around the rose. 2) Dig out all of the grass and weeds which are within 2 feet in all directions of the base of the rose. 3) Water it well. 3) One day after you have watered it, feed the rose with any rose food - follow the directions. 4) Put a 2 inch layer of mulch all around the rose - to the same 2 ft diameter where you weeded. 5) Get some Preen or Weed Seed Prevent or any other stuff which prevents weed seed from germinating from your local nursery. Gently sprinkle it around the rose on top of the mulch. Gently water it in - follow the directions. 6) Make sure your rose gets adequate water. You can get the mulch, rose food, and anti weed germination stuff at any nursery. WAIT, and I'll bet that it will bloom in a few weeks, after it recuperates. Jackie |

| if I left it alone would I get 2 different kinds of flowers?? :D |

| I agree with Jackie but i'm not sure which side is the real rose and which is the root stock. Do you recall what the leaves on the real rose looked like? I also wouldn't cut the root stock off, I'd tear it off. Grab the cane and tear downward so that it will damage the node and not grow back. |

| I think the rose bloomed on the side with the large fat leaves... I'd have to see if I could dig up some pictures (if I even took any) |

| Desirai - the cane to take off is the one with the tiny leaves - sorry for the confusion. To answer your question - yes, both sides would flower. The rootstock side might give you medium sized red blooms, in which case it is a rose frequently used for rootstock called 'Dr. Huey' (the leaves look right for that rose now). Dr. Huey is a red once blooming climber, which means that it only blooms in the Spring. Whatever color the blooms are, most rootstock roses are once bloomers. The main problem with leaving rootstock canes is that they will eventually take over the entire bush, and the original rose you bought, which had the nice big flowers and blooms all Summer (when it is happy) will die. | I see. I can't find any pictures of the rose. I did just go check it and all of the leftover dead buds are on the side with the big fat leaves. So I should dig down and get rid of the side with the tiny leaves? :) |
|
| I dug around it. The big fat leaves are growing from above the soil where it was dormant. The tiny leaves are growing from way deep beneath the earth! So I broke off all the tiny leaf pieces |

| You need to dig down on the side where the cane with the tiny leaves was and find the bottom of that cane where it is growing out of the trunk under the ground and cut it off flush with the side of the trunk and then put the dirt you dug back. Just breaking off the cane or leaves does nothing except make it grow more. Jackie |
