Flour for aphids

Someone suggested sprinkling good ol white flour on the aphids. Let it set for about 15 min. or so and go hose it off. It has worked well for me, and we are not supposed to eat white flour anyway...It is supposed to smother the aphids and cling to their sticky little bodies. Anyway it is worth another try, huh? ( use a big strainer or flour sifter)

Honest to God, I have not seen an aphid yet in 2012.

We haven't even seen the big flock of little brown birds that arrive in spring, eat aphids, and fly away. I saw one of them (a "scout", perhaps?). He quickly flew on.

But I know for sure that I would tolerate a few aphids, rather than see my roses covered with flour -- flour turning to glue in the morning dew.

Whew....I'm glad someone else said 'glue'. That's exactly what I was thinking. Why go ruin a perfectly pretty garden by putting flour on it? Delicious cookies would be a better use.

I had a few aphids the other day. They seem to be confined to only a couple of roses & while they elicited a couple of curse words from me, I assure you they were gone within seconds of discovery.

A blast of water, or a good smooshing between the fingers.

I agree with Jeri. No flour in my garden. I've seen aphids in my greenhouse but soon the ladybugs will appear and the aphids will be gone. I can wait.

Just a good hard spray of plain water should take care of the aphids and you won't have the mess that flour will make!

spray! the roses with water in about 15 min after flour applications. Will not leave glue! U also sprinkle it lightly. Read the text! I have used it a number of times and don't see any residue.

RE: Flour for aphids

Yes, but consider this:
That same spray of water would get rid of your aphids WITHOUT the flour.
If it is a strong enough spray to wash off flour, it's going to wash off aphids.
It's just making a simple task more difficult than it has to be.

I'll fax you some aphids right over, Jeri! They're here in sheltered spots. Anything exposed to the direct sun and wind is clean but in a few spot which are sheltered from the harsher elements, they're thick as chicken breading! Kim

Kim -- No thanks.

But, honestly, a veritable ARMY of ladybug larvae hatched out in our neighbor's "meadow" this spring. I've never seen anything quite like it.

But the second installment of that story is that we have NO aphids. LUCKY US!
