| My large red roses bloomed profusely last year. I fed them and pruned them in the fall. I'm afraid I went overboard when I used super phosphate in the ground. This spring, so far, they have major lush growth, but they are not budding. What have I done? What can I do? Prune hard now?

Here, HT roses usually bloom around Father's Day, or mid-June. That's almost two months in the future. At this point in time, they should be leafing out, but flower buds are weeks in the future.

Excess phosphate is harmful, but it would show as deficiencies of other nutrients producing visible symptoms in the foliage and new shoots. It takes a lot of P to do harm, and probably overdoing once wouldn't do it. It persists in the soil and can build up with repeated overuse. If you don't have buds when roses are starting to bloom in your area, come back for another consultation.

PS, fall is not the right time to prune roses. With climbers and once-blooming shrub roses, severe fall pruning can prevent bloom.

Patience. I have a few buds out there but a lot of them just have leaves so far. It was too warm too early and they all leafed out but since then it's been very cool so they aren't really doing much growing. Wait until it really warms up and stays warm. They'll bloom!
