Don Juan climbing rose

I just purchased 2 beautiful red don Juan climbing roses from the nursery. I have little experience with roses and I was wondering if they would cover a 7 ft chain link fence eventually? Would it do well next to a chain link or should I trellis it? And how far apart should I plant them? Thanks!

They do great on a fence. I had mine on chain link fence in FL. Planted them 6' apart. Three yrs time they were amazing. I'll be putting DJ in my garden up here next spring. Have the perfect spot for it.

I'm only on my second year of Don Juan but it's already one of my favorite roses and I would recommend it to anyone!!!

In what zone do you live?
First check that the rose is hardy in your zone. AFAIK, Don Juan is not hardy in the colder zones. That means that you'll start each year from the beginning. However, as you can read on other threads, it can survive with proper protection during the winter.

After many trys over several years, I finally gave up on Don Juan. It would die back to the ground no matter what winter protection I tried. If it did survive it would slowly lose vigor and fail to make it the second year. Dublin Bay, although not as fragrant, is my choice for a red climber.

My aunt had one growing up a dogwood tree. Someone sprayed it with weed killer and it died but it was beautiful. She bought another one this year and it is already blooming great!
