I just purchases 3 "Scarlet" New Generation Carpet Roses. I planted them in front of a 3 year old Crape Myrtle. I prepared the soil by tilling and adding slightly decomposed, finely mulched leaves and about 4 bags of top soil mixed into the area. Each plant came with a packet of rose fertilizer and said to apply the whole packet around the base of the plant as I did but I also mixed it into the soil a little. The I added more mulched leaves to the top layer of soil because that is the kind of mulch I use in all my beds. I have read that of all mulches, leaves are the best for their nutrients and hold moisture into the soil better. Anyway, all of the lower, smaller leaves on each rose are turning yellow and falling off. I have been gardening for years and have many varieties of roses and have never seen this before. They are turning a bright yellow as to indicate they are being over watered but I have only been watering them every other day. Our temps have been in the 80's and above with not much rain, just a few sprinkles this week. I am starting to think that it might be the fertilizer that came with them but too much fertilizing would look more like dried up and browning leaves wouldn't it? Any suggestions?

I also wanted to add that the mulched leaves on the top of the soil in only a few inches thick and is not touching any part of the base of the plant and my source of leaves come from my own yard and are from Pin Oaks and dogwoods...

Over watering and under watering will result in the same symptoms. But it may just be some transplant shock too. I don't usually fertilize newly planted roses until after they've put on some new growth to tell me the roots are growing so it may also be some of that too. I would just keep them watered and give them some more time to settle in and see if they come out of it on their own.

Don't worry. It's just transplant shock. I had the same problem last Sept when they were just planted. Now they are blooming with shinny green leaves. I have several of "Pink supreme", "white", "scarlet" flower carpets. Only one of the "white" flower carpets got a bit of powdery mildew last winter. They are such tough plants and easily to root. I dropped some cuttings to entertain my very busy toddler. Now I have several new plants!
