I was volunteering for a charity run this morning. They had dozens of bananas that had been cut in half and were going to throw away. My roses are going to be in banana heaven. Now, my question. How many can I feed them without doing too much? Thanks.

Not sure about how many you can feed them at once, but I do know that bananas can be a magnet for critters you don't want anywhere near your garden. Mush 'em up real good, and bury the mush deeper than you might think you have to. Kay

I learn something new every day on this site. Your question made me do a search and I found an interesting site with all kinds of ideas on how to feed your roses. http://www.ehow.com/how_4597259_feed-roses-banana-peels.html Thanks for posting the question, as now I know my roses will love my peels! |

Nancy, I've only put the peels on as I have a raccoon problem. If raccoons aren't a problem for you, load them up. I once buried all the leftovers from a family crab boil. I dug holes beside several roses and buried the leftovers and scraps. You never saw such a mess as I had the next morning. They had dragged crab legs and innards from one end of that bed to the other. Not something I'll ever repeat.

This is so funny! Years ago, when I first started rose gardening, I made a special trip to NY and bought a crate of banana's from a guy off the street. Let them deteriorate first, I find it keeps the critters back.

With my banana peels I dice them then let them soak in water over night or a day and to sort of make a tea out of them, Strain the peels and put the 'banana peel tea' in a watering can and fill it up with water then water the roses, and then put the peels in your garden :-)

Me? I toss it toward the roses...even whole bananas that never made it to banana bread. My teen son picked one up, looked at me holding it up, and just shook his head. I figure they have to have some stories to tell their kids about how nutty their mom was!!

I usually cut them into small pieces and then put them on the ground near the roses that have a small fence around them-----so far the fences are still standing---- My DH made several different size circular fences for my smaller roses--- Florence
